Strange Engine start up sounds (2023 CX-5)

Hi Folks,

I am so excited to be joining a community of Mazda enthusiasts!

I am getting an odd sound when I start my car sometimes. It's pretty new, a 2023, has about 9K miles on it and up until this week has been fantastic.

Typically, when I start it up, I get two rumble sounds for a lack of a better term. But sometimes I just get one. I will post two videos for reference. You may have to turn the volume up to hear, my apologies. The first one is the typical startup sound and the second one is the odd one.

Also, I have gotten the battery, alternator and starter checked at my local AutoZone and they are all good.

Thanks in advance and I appreciate your all's feedback and ideas.

Best,
FairProf

I can't hear anything out of the norm but I can say that when these motors start up cold, they are LOUD compared to other car brands. I assume that the motor is being choked by the ECM while it's cold, to warm it up. After several moments, our quiets down to become MORE quiet than other car brands I've had. They really rumble at cold start up.

My CX-5 and MX-5 both do the same thing, like yours does with the odd sounds at startup.

I think you're talking about engine cranks. In the first video, the engine cranks a couple of times before starting. In the first, the engine barely cranks once and it starts.

While my CX-9 has never cranked over that quickly, I have noticed a difference between starting a cold engine vs. starting while the engine is hot/warm. For example, usually when I pick up my wife after work, I turn the car off while I wait. There have been a few times where she comes out early, so I turn the car off and then start it again in like 1-2 mins. On those occasions, the car cranks over almost as fast as your second video.

Maybe something like that is triggering the "quick start"? I wouldn't worry too much about it though, I don't think this is going to hurt anything.

The first video is very familiar to me. I don't recall my car starting up like the second one.

Thanks so much for the responses folks! My worries have been alleviated a good deal given that some of you also experience the one crank start up sound. Maybe it's just something the car does sometimes. I have not seen any TSBs describing that start up sound either.

I will take sm1ke's advice and make note if the one crank start up sound occurs more often on a warmed up engine.
