Mazdaspeed Protege
How tuneable is the Stock turbo on my Mazdaspeed Protege? How much boost can I get from it?

After supporting mods are taken care of (most importantly some sort of engine management) should go about 15 psi max before it's too far out of the efficiency range.

Do you know how much PSI it is pushing bone stock? And what engine components would I need to get it tuned for 15?

the boost varies between cars. mine is 6 pounds stock. some are 5.5 and others are 6.5. but in short, its about 6 pounds. even with all the supporting mods, running 15 psi is over the limit and you will eventually blow the engine up (rods are too skinny). alot of ppl are happy with 10 pounds with fmic, full exhaust, engine management, and a couple other bolt ons. even at 10 psi, you are risking the life of your engine. the msp engine is identical to a stock protege with a turbo slapped on. if you look around, there are quite a few threads that will warn you about what happens when the boost is too high. im gonna tune mine at 11 psi. i just picked up a long block from a junkyard so that when my engine goes, i will have a rebuilt one ready to go.

^If im not mistaken its just outside of Orlando, not to far from Sanford. Other than that I have nothing to contribute to this thread. I would like to know the answer though.

It's not the turbo thats holding you back its the stock block that sucks for boost. It's fine for low boost but as has been said the rods are very weak.

Yeah, its about 40 min north of orlando on 441. Near sanford.

I used to live out their, just on the other side of the highway from town center mall. Before they built that gigantic chevy dealership. Its a nice area.
