Stock tires on 2015 CX-5 are dead after 17k miles. Warranty issue?

2015 CX-5 Touring
I bought a 2015 CX-5 in December 2015. I've put approximately 16k on the stock Yokohama tires since then (had my Blizzaks on for both winters). The stock tires are pretty much due for replacement. I have about 1/32" of tread left before I hit Mazda's recommended change point.

I typically expect to get about 40,000 miles out of a set of tires. 17,000 miles seems offensively poor wear to me. I pretty much drive like a grandpa, e.g. defensively/slowly, don't corner or brake hard, etc. Has anyone ever argued something like this with their dealer and gotten a replacement? Or money back? Or any other sort of compensation? Or should I be contacting Yokohama instead?

The OEM Yokohama Geolandar G91A 225/65R17 100H tires on CX-5 Touring are rated only at 280 B A UTQG which means you should be happy if you could get 28,000 miles out of them according to the UTQG treadwear index. Of course 17,000 miles of tread life seems unreasonable. But car companies don't offer tire warranty for OEM tires but the tire companies do. And I don't think tire companies offer any tread-life warranty on OEM tires. Have you ever noticed any early uneven wear on your Yoko tires? Unless there's obvious sign of mis-alignment otherwise you may out of luck on this. Go get a set of General AltiMax RT43 tire which is top rated grand touring all-season tire for this size, 225/65R17 102H, by TireRack consumers. General AltiMax RT43 is rated at 700 A A UTQG, 51 psi maximum inflation pressure, and weighted only 25 lbs. You can't beat its excellent 6-year / 75,000-mile tread-life warranty. And it's a good time to buy now as they offer $50 cash card for buying a set.

I was down to 5/32" left of tread when I replaced them at 34000 miles last week. We probably do 90% highway driving.

17 is on the low side - what kind of roads do you drive on? Is some unpaved? That will eat tires. Are all 4 this way? I'm assuming proper maintenance like rotating and keeping pressure to spec has been done.

I have 27,000miles on my Yokos G91s and will get another 10,000 before the wear bars. Are you the only driver or are you driving on roads with cut up glass:-)

Are you sure your tires are really that worn down? Or is your dealer simply trying to make some extra $$?

The OEM tires have two sets of wear bars. One at 6/32" and one at 2/32". At 17,000 mi you should be at the taller wear bar and still have a good 30,000mi to go on the tires.

Sure, older tires will not grip as well in the rain as brand new ones, but you would see a bigger improvement in stopping distance by slowing down in the rain from 70MPH to 60MPH than you would from a new set of tires.

ClangClang-- I experienced rapid tire wear on the oem yoko G91's.Most of my driving is around town(round trips of 4 to 10 miles or so) so lots of stops, starts and turns. All which eat tires. At 2000 miles the fronts wore down 2/32" and the rears 1/32".What really surprised me was that of those 2000 miles,at least 1000 miles was highway because of a trip out of state. If I recall correctly, the new total tread depth was 10/32" and I didn't think they were going to deliver much mileage.Since I replace tires at around 4/32"depending on approaching seasonal weather and I didn't like the ride quality(and noise sometimes), at 3000 miles they were replaced with General RT43 H tires.Gave the yoko's a good home at a local charity.Maybe a bit extravagant but no regrets.
