Stock looking flip-out head unit?

Thanks! Sorry for all the questions, you guys have been a great help. Another question, though. My deck has a wire marked "ILLUM" but in the deck's manual, it says "dimmer wire". Do I connect that to the dimmer or illumination wire of the car?

Out of curiosity, is the dimmer an analog voltage for how bright the interior lights are supposed to be, while the illum is an on/off?

Don't worry about connecting those wires. I believe the only thing that will do is dim the radio lights with the interior lights. Most aftermarket radios don't respond to this function anyway...

Alot of people say that motorized isnt as reliable (more parts to break), but I sure hope they are wrong because I have a motorized lcd (carputer). I admit it looks pretty cool to have a screen flip out, but personally, I would always be paranoid about it breaking. It seems kind of a waste to put a single DIN unit in our proteges, since its a double DIN. You might want to consider a pioneer avic d3. I saw one in person and I am starting to regret putting a carpc in my car =(

When I was installing it I ran into the same problem everyone does. There's nothing to support the deck on the back. The stock deck used a rubber piece that screwed into the back, which is obviously not the same size as the hole in the aftermarket deck. My solution? Make something similar! I wrapped a bunch of layers of electrical tape on a banana plug. Then I inserted an M4x30mm screw into the narrow side, and two matching M4 bolts into the big side to hold everything solidly in place. The result was a piece that fit perfectly and holds the deck quite solidly in the back.

The scosche wiring harness didn't have an illumination wire in it, and I didn't notice that until after I bought it. I didn't want to cut up the stock harness since that's why I got the scosche in the first place, so I made my own illum wire by inserting a wire (orange) and taping it in place. The ground, I wired to an alligator clip and clipped it on a piece of metal. I'm a little concerned about it falling off, but should be fine as long as nothing pulls down on it.

The radio box (B02A-66-9M0A) fit perfectly in the bottom slot and was only $12. I wasn't about to pay $120 for the MSP pocket just for a little door. The box fit so perfectly that it snapped in solidly, and sat flush without moving. The mounting cage for the radio, though, didn't have anything to hold it. I didn't get the MSP radio support bar, so I put a piece of cardboard between the pocket and the deck. Holds it in place well enough but it's pretty ghetto in there. I might get a support bar eventually just to make it clean.

The result looks good, I think. Looks nice and stock when it's off, though not quite as clean as the MSP unit. I love how the panel flips down, though, revealing a nice big screen and a big control panel. And the faceplate detaches too, so I can take it with me! It's a shame that kenwood still put such small buttons on there and wasted so much space, though. Overall very satisfied!

Heh, I take it down when I'm parked outside, not as much to prevent people stealing it as to prevent people from scratching the paint or killing my window while trying to steal it.

w00t, canucks!
