hey guys, a few weeks ago i noticed a small problem that has now put my protege into the shop. what happened was i turned the car on and noticed a small hissing and when i turned the wheel alot of noise comming from my engine bay, i recognized the noise came from the power steering pump, and the p/s hose shook alot to when the wheel was turnt. fluids were fine and all that. however now the effort it took to turn the wheel became tiresome, parking was a nightmare and so was turning the wheel with the brakes on. a week or so later i had a brake job and i asked the mechanic to just look at it. he said my steering column by my pedals looked like it was hit by a hammer. he greased it up and it was better for a few days. then i went on vacation and my car sat parked for 5 days. today i drove it and i felt like i had no steering pressure at all, the wheel just turnt like a slushy slow but free from any pressure feeling. so i drove it right to the shop because its just too odd. I really hope its the p/s pump cause if its my rack and pinion i dont know if i can afford to get that fixed or replaced. what do you guys think about all this? how much for new rack/pinion? what do you think the problem is? and MOST important HOW DID THIS HAPPEN, i literally turnt my car on one day and heard the noise....and i didnt do anything crazy with the car that would cause that kind of stress to blow a power steering pump. i hope this is just a quick and easy repair.
