Starter kill switch

I've read the past threads about a kill switch and someone had posted a .doc about one but it's no longer available. *SO*, I've come to you guys now.

I want to install a kill switch in the "window lock" button by the driver's window control panel. That way I have to hold down this button while turning the key or the car won't start. Sounds easy, but how hard is it to do this? Really.

I'm not very electrically inclined but I've installed a turbo timer, boost gauge & have played around a bit with wiring. Does anyone have a how-to or any ideas?

Would I also loose the normal functionality of the window lock button or is there a way I can keep it?

You would lose it's functionality and would also have to run more wires from the door into the car. Besides, the window lock switch is not a momentary switch, which means that you wouldn't be able to make it a "Hold down while starting" setup.

i think i'd be better if you run a diffrent switch.........
like under the car or something. Running it through the windows
switch could short something

The usual way to do this is to cut the starter wire and put a relay in-line on it with one side of the coil to ground and the other to the up side of any of the actual window switches, headlight high beam, wiper or any other temporary switch. This way when you hold the switch it closes the relay and allows you to start the car. Once started you don't need the starter any more so you can let go of the switch and it'll still operate normally.

Other choice os to use a latched switch, like the window lock out, fog lights or other similar functions and put the relay on the ignition so that the ignition will not turn on unless the switch is on. The switch has to stay on the whole time you are driving otherwise the car will shut down. You would either have to lose the functionality of the switch or add a second one to do this.

Realize that both of these are very old methods or starter and ignition kills and any theif who is some what compotent should be able to figure it out with in 20 second just by trying all the switches. I used to run in to it a lot when customers would drop off their cars to have work done on them and would forget to tell use. Then they would be surprised when they come back latter and we were able to move the car and they realize they forgot to show us how to start it. It will fool an inexperienced thief but not one who knows a little.

Alittle more advanced method is to use hiden pressure switch that can be put under the carpet or a piece of vinyl or fabric so that you have to know the exact location to push for the starter to work. This is more effective in that it truly is a 'hidden' switch.

The other consideration is where you actually wire the "kill". If you do all the work of a hidden switch or pressure switch or mental telepathy switch, it is all useless if a theif can reach up under the column and jumper two wires together, which any theif above amateur status would know to look for.

One way to do it would be to put the switch (Normaly Open), where ever you had it in series with the switch from the key. This way, You wouldn't be able to start it without the switch closed, I'm not sure where you would have to cut the wires to do this, I'd have to look at my car, but I think that would be the easiest way, and also, it will protect you against theives who would just cut the wires under the steering colum and splice them together to start the car, of course, you would have to put the switch and the wires running to it out of view so the theif wouldn't know it was there, and I don't know if this is possible because of the location of the wires. If you want, I can figure out exactly what you would have to do, just let me know if you want me to.
