Squealling brakes when not braking?

Protege 5 2002, auto
Hi,

My 2002 Protege 5 recently developed a problem - there is a squeaky sound coming from left-rear tire area. Sound like brakes, but it is audible during normal driving (very loud sometimes) - the sound vanishes if I start to brake.

It happens only after driving for a while. If I leave the car for 5 minutes on a parking lot, and come back, the squealling will be gon. After another couple km it's back.

Drives me nuts, and when I take the car to a dealer, they can't hear it, because the car was sitting in front of dealership for couple of minutes so it's quiet now.

It seems that the easiest way to get that sound is to get on a highway. If it starts to squeak, it doesn't matter if I'm going a 100/h or 10/h - it's there.

The brake pads are still good. There is no rust on the rotors.

I'll appreciate any help!
Thanks!

i have the same problem, but its gotten worse. now it squeaks when applying the brakes and when im not applying the brakes. Its like 24/7 squealing. It makes my car sound so bad.

It could be the brake pads, a warning sqeaul, a foreign object, or your rotors are glazed.

i heard that the 2002 models all have problems with the rear brakes. apparently , when you pressed the brake, and then released it, the rear pads would continue applying pressure on the disk, causing pre mature brake wear, and increased fuel economy. all dealers are fixing this problem when you go into for service. the 2003 models do not have this problem

Check you pads. Mine squealed like a dying pig when mine got REALLY low.

it could the metal "retainers" that cradle the pads. they squealed on the front on mine until i hit the brakes.

I agree with everyone else. Pull the wheel off and check out the components. Make sure the pads have plenty of material left on them. Also, you might want to try driving it in reverse and slamming on the brakes a few times. This is the procedure to readjust the rear calipers. If the problem persists, you could have a dragging caliper.

Thanks for all replies,

I'll try to do what you suggest. Actually I think my Mazda had the problem with rear pads still applying pressure to the rotors after releasing the brake pedal - my first set of rear brake pads was gone after 19k! But the rotors didn't look like the pads are touching them while driving. I thought that the pads were defective. I couldn't convince the dealer that this is mazda's fault.

Current pads are wearing OK.

BTW. Anyone could recommend a mazda dealership with good service dept. in Mississauga/Toronto?
