Dale made a reference to cold starts. That sounded like a viscosity reference.
If the filter bottlenecks, the bypass will kick in. For a filter to lower the pressure, it would somehow have to open up. To raise the pressure, something would have to constrict the flow.
I did "mis-speak" on the volume/pressure relationship: I know several people who use the pressure indicator to determine when it needs oil. For that to be useful, though, the volume has to be down too much to be safe.
