Speeds 1,2,3 gone from HVAC fan switch

2002 Mazda Protege5 Hatch
Hi all. I just read the following thread, but wanted to ask this independently as my issues doesn't seem to relate to A/C not working:

http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113658&highlight=fan+switch&page=2

I have an 02' Protege5 and the HVAC fan speed switch isn't working on settings 1,2,3. I have it working on 4 only, and it doesn't appear to be affecting the A/C.

It sounds like it MAY be a control board issue, but might it only be the switch as well?

Does anyone have a copy of the TSB for the control module I could look at, as I never got a notice from Mazda.

Thanks so much in advance!

EDIT: I just went out and tried the A/C again. When switched from setting 0 to eithr 1,2,3 the AC compressor clutches in and the light comes on. However the fans do NOT come on. When I switch fan to position 4, the fan comes on and the A/C compressor unclutches & the AC light goes.

That is a good thing to read, but i'm not sure that's the same issue. There are two cables that run behind the dash for the HVAC. One is for the temperature and the other is the fan selector. Make sure the cable that hooks under the driver's side dash is connected to that white plastic piece it is supposed to attach to.

Thanks for the above info guys.

I understand that the control module only reads voltage from the switch, and controls the fan speed based on that. Is this true?

If so, I would more suspect an issue with the module rather than a loose connnection.

Just the same, I will definitely be looking at the connection you mentioned above. Thanks for that.

Do either of you have any first hand experience with the Control Modules for the P5's? I also read it was isolated to an 2002 model issue, which is the year I have as well.

Thanks again in advance.

I know on my car the AC shuts off when the fan is on setting 2 pretty much every time, but I haven't had a chance to fix it yet, it doesn't bother me enough. Once i lose other speeds or it works more infrequently I will mess with it. The last few months the 03 P5s were the only cars that got the 'good' HVAC setups that don't have any issues, the link MattV posted has all the info. for that.

I have the same exact issue... Have you found a solution yet?

If the issue is with the blower motor only not working and not related to the a/c compressor comming on, I would check the blower motor resistor first before I did anything else.

Behind the glove box. Open it, then push in on the sides near the dashboard, and the glove box just kinda drops out. Behind it you will find the resistor. I think it's the only electrical connection there so it's hard to miss. Unplug it, take out the two screws holding it in, put the new one in place and screw it in, plug it in, done.

Pretty common problem with our beloved Proteges.

Oh yeah, the part looks like this: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/search/Blower+Motor+Resistor/02627/C0331.oap?make=Mazda&model=Protege5&year=2003&vi=1416833

Hi Guys,

I have a mazda 3 2009 2.0L with the same problem with the blower motor but I am not sure if it uses a blower motor resistor because I cant find the part from Rock Auto.

Any help will be much appreciated.

blower motor resistors are a common fault on many cars. i have had 2 nissans and a ford escort need one fairly cheap and easy fix
