I just want to know if 75 or 80 MPH is to much speed for my engine on a daily basic, I have to drive 80 miles to and from work so I just want to hear your opinion on this matter, never had a four cylinder engine car until now so let me know.
Thanks.

You'll be fine. I drive every morning and afternoon for 30 minutes each way, going at least 75... usually more. Our engines aren't revving that high at those speeds compared to say an older protege. I had a 1990 Protege LX 5 speed with a 1.8 Liter 4 cyl. that stayed around 4,000 Rpm's at 70MPH. I drove that car mainly on the highway at ~80 to ~85 MPH everyday for 5 years. The car never had any engine trouble of any sort, and when I sold it, it had 124,000 miles and still ran perfect. Just keep up your maintenance schedule and you should have no trouble(Change the oil, air filter, ect...). See in the pic below, we are barely turning 3,500 RPM's at ~70. Nothing to worry about. :)

PS>Sorry that pic is damn big... I can't resize here at work very easily.

you were taking a picture while going 70mph???

watch the road!!! :D

and Roise, don't worry about Proteges running at high speed. These little 4 cylinders are meant to rev!!!! and they love it!!!

I average 80-85mph most days on the way to and from work. It's not a big deal. Hell the engine doesn't even seem to mind 120mph that much. Has anybody else tried to set the cruise at high speed. I tried to set mine at 115 on a trip to L.A. and it dropped me down to 100 every time. I guess they feel I don't need cruise control at such speeds. =)

Actually, my g/f at the time leaned over there and took the picture... :p It only took her about 15 or 20 tries to get one that was lined up fairly well.. LOL. I am way to clumsy to do such a thing on my own. I don't do hardly anything while driving... no cell phone, I usually leave the radio alone unless stopped, and don't try to eat anything. About the only thing I will try is drinking a coke or something.

80 MPH? Are we talking 2nd gear or third?

Seriously, the Protege loves revs (well, maybe not Derrick's level of revs...but...). I find myself cruising in 4th gear on some roads in traffic because it keeps the car on the cam(s) and ready for quick response. (Both 4th and 5th are overdrive gears, BTW, the 4th cog is just under 1:1).

Happy Motoring!

I just completed HALF of our vacation trip....1923 miles cross country....and ALL of that time was spent at or above 75....if I was driving it was between 80 and 90....for HOURS and HOURS at a time....and my wifes P-5 STILL got between 27-29 mpg.... :{D

This has been a popular topic for people when they have just purchased their Portege5. Mazda claims their is no real break in period but my dealer said to keep it under 4000 RPMs for the first 800-1000 miles. I did this and after I had broke her in I changed the oil and started to have fun. All the fun hides between 3600-6500 RPMs.
