Special Tool For Oil Filter ?

I just happened to be reading my owners manual, trying to find the oil capacity on the 3, and when i found it, the manual said that you need a special tool to put the filter back on. IS that true ..I think its BS, but anyone else do thier own oil changes ? (braindead

You can purchase an adaptor so that you can just use spin on type filters, or you can take it to the dealer

Tools Required:

10mm Socket
15mm Socket
3/8" Drive Ratchet
3" or 6" 3/8 Drive Extension
6.5mm Allen Wrench (Hex Key)
76mm Oil Filter Socket (Or a Strap Wrench)
Medium Phillips Screwdriver
Oil Catch Pan

Parts Required:

4.5 Qt's of 5w-20 or 5w-30 oil. (For recommendations check out the UOA section)
Replacement Oil Filter Cartiage and O-rings.

link below is step by step...just pretend it's not a 6...engine set up is the same for that model...also 0W20 does wondrs for the 2.3 some people actuly dynoed tested and did UOA to confirm that

Yep. It's a different type of filter. As of right now, you can only get them from the dealer.

Just fyi, I used a strap wrench when I changed mine and it worked fine.

Just fyi2, I bought the parts to convert the 2.3L to a spin-on type filter from my dealer and it cost me $34.90 including tax. Now I can buy my filters from Autozone (STP S6607) and I don't have to worry about nicking an o-ring or cross-threading the cap and blowing 2 qts of oil onto my radiator.

I'll probably be offering the filter and o-ring that I already have for sale.

Parts are from the dealer only. It's a new oil filter mounting plate and gasket.

There's an article on the Mazda6 Tech Forum that has the part numbers.

pretend it's not a 6(bolts for splash grard might not be the exact same...but process and engine for the car shown is) and 0w-20 is the favorite for those who did swaps(gossip) ....before you fully agree on the 0w-20 read this section for the 6i uoa
