I was thinking of going to 17's on my car and now I just thought: well my spare is a 15. That's not going to work if my car breaks down and needs an extra tire. Has anyone got any ideas?

your spare will work fine because the outer diameter of the 17" wheels and tires will be pretty close to that of your 15" spare. even if you're rolling on a donut, you'll be fine because the car's independent suspension will compensate. i'm not saying you can ride forever on your spare, but it should make it to the nearest tire repair place. your 15" stock wheels are probably something like 195/60/r15 or even 185/60/r15. with a 17" tire, you go either 205/45/17 or 215/40/17 so you keep the OUTER diameter the same.
