Spare Tire PSI

:
Mazda CX-9 GT
Since I have a road trip coming up, I decided to measure the PSI of my spare. Turned out it was way lower than expected, 22 PSI. The door jamb and the sticker on the tire says it should be 60 PSI (which is pretty normal for any spare tires).

So, I will be getting inflated to 60PSI today. Not sure if its normal for it to loose almost 8 PSI per year. I think it is. This post is not for asking any question or seeking information, but more of a suggestion for everyone to check the spare air pressure in case you are stuck on a road and need to replace it.

Suggest to anyone that they check the air pressure in all five of their tires and they'll give you a funny look.....

A compact spare needs the 60 psi to carry the weight on that small tire. A regular size spare needs regular inflation pressure--pump it up to the max shown on the sidewall just to give yourself some margin.

It's been my experience the space saver spare 'donuts' lose quite a bit of air over time. If you carry stuff in the back of your vehicle it makes checking and filling the tire inconvenient and easy to overlook. Carrying a small air compressor has been my solution to this issue so I can fill the spare as needed if I need to use it.

Just a reminder...check the air in your spare. 60 psi. Yep, mine was low. If the compact spare tire has low air pressure it'll flex more than designed when running. That added flex will get the tire heated more than designed. That added heat will cause the tire to fail early. You'll need the lug wrench or other 21mm wrench to remove the tire hold down bolt. If you have the subwoofer there, remind yourself how to unplug the sub's cable to get it out of the way.

Keep in mind the 50/50 rule. The compact spare tire, @ 60 psi, is good for about 50 mph for 50 miles. Or less. Get the flat tire fixed or replaced soonest.

What emergency gear do you carry? You need to change a tire only when it is a dark & stormy night, so...hand crank light, tarp, flares and/or reflective triangle, small tools, first air kit, towing gear, what's in your car? Did you know that the small circle on the front of the CX-9 under the left corner of the grille is a removable piece to access threads for a towing eye? Ditto for the two removable squares beneath the lift gate. You might have to buy the tow eyes with the correct threads, and add a plastic auto trim remover tool to get the plates off without damage.

Bonus point question--who can go directly to their car jack without hunting around?

Very important info that everyone should pay attention to.
