What?! The bar's you're talking about, or at least what I think you're talking about, are suspension bars. If you can find a way to bolt a harness to your sway or strut bars, I'll envy you forever.PHRiSCo said:Well the MSP has a cross beam aka OEM roll cage already in the car that I believe the other stock protege types dont have, please correct me if Im wrong?

Good information, thanks. There's also a roll cage already made for the Protege. I won't give out a straight link because I'm being selfish/greedy and want to be the first MSP with one, but it's out there.indulf said:and please, if you guys go putting cages in your MSP, then:
-use the proper materials!!!!!! dont get a "pipe bender" from harbor freight and some schedule 40 plumbing pipe. in addition to being unbelievably heavy, the tensile strength is all wrong and the cage will likely shatter on a sharp impact. proper materials, in my opinion, means 4130 chrome-moly tubing.
-use the proper bender! make sure its a mandrel bender. jd-squared makes the best IMO. www.jd2.com is their site. the model 3 is plenty for what we would need, and it is easily modifiable for use with an air-over-hydraulic ram if you're lazy or a wuss and cant pull the lever.. and get the degree wheel, youll need it.
-dont forget to tie into the firewall! dont forget to mount your seats on the cage! dont forget padding! and DONT COMPROMISE! make sure you triangulate, gusset where necessary, and make sure you know how to weld. no novice welding on your cage! as a rule of thumb, pretty welds=strong welds. i personally wouldnt use any process but GTAW (tig). go for the "stack of dimes" look and youll be fine..
sorry for the soap boxi come from the off-road world where this stuff is extraordinarily important. a crappy cage can make an accident worse for you than if you didnt have one.
anyone out there have a cage in their MSP? id love to see pix.
The wrecked MSPs were stock safety-wise, if my memory is correct. I have yet to see a MSP with any type of real cage/bar. I've seen one MSP with one but it was for show, not a real setup.VTEC 8 MSP said:I think the people on here who wrecked their car had these. Many people own themselves in msp's and harness bars
Even after reading that link, it's hard to believe a PROPERLY PLANNED/INSTALLED bar/cage will allow this. A stock seatbelt holds you less than a harness so how would someone slide out? If you're at the point where you're sliding out of a harness, I'm sorry but you're pretty much ****** in a stock seatbelt before that time.msp4you said:No, I'm talking in the event of a rollover without a cage or a front / rear end accident. With a 4 point harness you will slide out the bottom, submarine, and head under the dash and probably have the air bag smash you in the face on top of the already broken body parts consisting to you going under the dash. Too add, in the event of a rollover you will be stuck in the harness and then break your neck because the harness is holding you in to the seat and it not giving way.
Note: Take it with a grain of salt if you want.

The harness should mount within 4" of the center of the shoulder joint (roughly C7-C8 vertibrae-wise). Thiat is why they should not be allowed to mount to the floor either. With this high of a mounting point, the belt loses it's effectiveness in preventing forward motion. The lap belt will hold your pelvis while the rest of the body travels forwards and downward. Spinal compression fracture. Not comfortable. If the brace was lowered, I'd say nice piece, at least it looks like quality construction.
BTW, This will likely not pass tech at any SCCA event because of the height to the driver. If it does, your tech guy needs his head examined.

Off topic but what made you pick that as a goal.daedalus said:Holy crap... thanks for posting this up. I'm definatly picking a race version this summer... or street if i cant have a passenger seat with the race version. I'm thinking this is kind of a necessity for my 170mph top speed goal... (boom04)
daedalus said:The engineering and design required to accomplish it. Top speed and the MSP can be done, but so much is needed that the end result will be an amazing feat of design and build quality. Pretty much EVERY weak link has to be replaced. Brakes need upgrading, more power is needed, custom ratio'ed transmissions are required, areodynamic redesign to the underbody of the car with custom splitters and diffusers to smooth airflow, and saftey measurements like a roll bar/cage, racing harnesses, etc...
Just seems like a cool project that I'd like to do, because no one has before. THe car will be one of, if not the most well rounded, completly built MSP in the world to accomplish the goal.
