Good grief!!! I thought it was too hot in texas to grow anything?? lol.

There are some watermelons floating in my neighbor's pool right now... it's pretty late, I wonder if they would miss just one... Hmmmm... :-) lol

those are some massive mellons!, i heard the competition ones are all geneticaly engineered, is that true? or is it like a selective breeeding kinda deal?

I dont know if any of you have here this.......But in Taiwan, they grew a water melon thats a shape of a sqaure. I know this sounds weird. But my friend is is Taiwanese and he is trying to find a picture on the internet. He saw it on the internet of some news site.

LMAO Gene........haha....thanks for the pictures.....me and my friend tried an hour trying to look for that picture.....now I can send it to him........LOL...........
where did you find it ??

And SirNuke......try to grow those watermelons.....hehe

fastdrvr, As a matter of fact....watermellons LOVE the heat, and need it to grow properly....you just need to give them the water they need. and your neighbor has them floating in his pool? hmmmm seems that wouldn't keep them very cool....not a pool around here anyway....you need a good icebox!!

the square mellons...yep...seen that before...they do NOT grow that shape naturally.....but what they do is put the LITTLE mellon in a square plesiglass box and allow it to grow into that shape...they did a study and found it saves them a LOT of money in shipping them...very little lost space.

I just went there and typed "square melons" in the search box.

Your son is adorable Sir Nuke! He's going to grow up to be a heartbreaker! Didn't you say you had a son about my age too?;) lol

My eldest DAUGHTER just truned 20 last month.

and can you even IMAGINE paying $83 for a stinkin watermellon? OMG!! and according to the artical that is 2X or 3X of the NORMAL going price of a watermellon? I can't even imagine paying $20 for one of the silly things. geeeeeeeeeeeeez!!!

Of coz you won't Sirnuke....Knowing that you can just grow them yourself !! haha......
But I won't even pay 20$ for one.

anyone can grow them....all you need is for the last frost to be gone....and a BIG pile of crap to plant the seeds in!! lol

no no no....not from YOU !! geeeeeeeeeeeez lol

they take soil that is VERY fertile...and very sandy.....I have some friends with horses....and I cleaned out their stalls in their barn for a while....I made a frame that is 8 feet by 8 feet square and about two feet deep....and filled it up with the sand and horse poo poo and let it set for about a year.....it was originally going to be a compost pile...so anything you put in there that is biodegradable is good stuff....then this last spring I just stuck in the seeds and they did great, they do need a lot of watering though....I just checked tonight and there are two more about ready to pick and I found two more just starting...they are about the size of golf balls. :{D

Yeah, watermelons are hard to kill, that's for sure! They'll grow in just about any soil and do especially well in Oregon...my old stomping grounds... :D

I miss gardening!

actually they won't....the type of soil we have here they won't grow at all....its nearly all clay.....that is why I had to build the PILE to grow them in.
