So, the large box doesn't fit in the Mazda5 huh?

2008 Mazda5 5MT Sport w/ Popular Package
Ha ha ha. So I bought a swing-set for my kid online few days ago and it arrived to the store today. To my surprise the box was bigger than expected (well, I actually thought there were several smaller boxes instead).

I quickly measured it and found that it could fit in the MZ5 (width and height at least). Yet, the store guys said: "no way it's gonna fit, rent a pick-up truck or borrow a friend's SUV". I took my chances so they helped me out putting it in the car. When they saw me parking @ the front door they were grinning... until I opened the liftgate, took the baby seat away, retracted the seats and... the damn box fitted in!...

Yes, I had to drive slowly with the liftgate open through back roads, but what the heck.

At the end, I said to myself: "I gotta post some pics for the guys at the forum" :D

Here we go!

The pics shows just how versatile the Mazda5 is. I am picking my home gym from my mom's place this weekend. I hope I fit everything in 1 trip.

That is a freaking huge box! And a very tight fit!

Yup, to be sincere it was a mere coincidence (the box was ~1/2 inch shorter in width than the liftgate opening and 3rd row "armrests"). Still, damn car has not stopped surprising me and quieting some non-believers (hah)

way to go!!! mazda5 rules.

who needs coilovers when you can just load a swing set and bammm!! dropped!

i just bought a new house and just about everything we purchased fit inside.

These all fit with the liftgate closed:

New standard sized pressed steel bath tub (it was funny to see the tub in the car. It had a "pimp my ride" look to it :P )
HE Washing Machine, and a dishwasher at the same time (removed from boxes)
Dryer
10x10 ft Gazebo (it was literally resting on the arm rest and ran all the way back to the lift gate)
Patio furniture set with fire a pit (the kids were in the backseat too. I should've taken a pic of this one for sure)

Needless to say this car can fit just about anything you can throw at it. It also came in handy during the moving process.
The next time I load it up i'll snap a pic.

way to go mazda. this thing can fit just as much stuff as my old SUV...and it looks cooler doing so. :P

So far I have hauled about 300lbs of landscaping blocks, the suspension sat lower, but never bottomed out. Also laid out some blankets and hauled 8 bags of mulch.....without folding down the second row, couldn't see out the back.

lol I hope that box was strapped down... or else there would be a swing set in someone else's car by now. :D

The only thing I would worry about would be having the liftgate come down on a bounce and possible cracking the back glass. Other than that, I would have done the same.

heh, while normally I'd agree with you, I think you grossly overestimate the 5's power off the line with a x00 lb load in the back (wink)

True, the original pics did not show that the liftgate was open yet tied down with a cord (and a big red strap) to a) avoid damaging the struts, b) avoid having the liftgate bouncing around and c) avoid other drivers from getting to damn close to me. Not the safest thing around but... (evil)

I also drove through back roads instead of taking the regular highway. Around here back roads are really old so you cannot exceed 30mph even with no traffic. And yes, 2/3 of the box were inside, plus as Jandree mentions, the load of the damn thing was heavy. The pushing took some effort so I really doubted it would come off on its own (drive)...
