So I want to change the fuel filter

(hand) Apparently we don't have one and it's just a crappy strainer. Or is there one and the parts store can't get the part but the dealer can? Anybody have any insight on this basic maintenance item?

yea the proteges don't have a true fuel filter. It's a filter sock that really can only be cleaned. I was actually talking to my parts guy at the dealer about it a couple weeks ago and he said the only time you really need to clean it is if you have some smoke or something coming from the exhaust. I dunno how much of this is true, but basically it's not as important as say cleaning the air filter.

I ended up just seafoaming the tank, the intake and the oil. Car runs smoother, however I still have an odd stumble that actually killed the engine when sitting at a stop light. Kinda nerve racking.

doesnt sounds like the sock. even if its clogged i dont think thats your problem.

Did you ever replace the coil packs?

Run some seafoam on the upper intake (thtrew the brake booster) and i think youll be good to go.

I already ran the seafoam through that. Ran it through all 3 ways possible including oil which I did an oil change on. The coil packs ohm out within .05ohms of a new one so they are in good working order. It's very sporadic and doesn't happen often, but I really don't like the idea of the wife driving around with the risk of being stranded especially since I go out of town often for work. She can't exactly drive my car. Car has 127,xxx miles and all basic maintenance has been completed through out the time we've had the car which we bought new. I'm going to clean the maf next and go from there.

i still havent done mine

but looks liek a couple of week screws and plugs. and a simple in and out but nothign is ever simple.

you might want to try cleaning the egr valve...sounds like the symptoms of a clogged egr valve

Thanks for the lead. Could be a possible suspect. I will report back with my findings in a week since I will be out of town. I wonder if my scan tool data log will let me scope it. I'll have to see, that way after the clean I can see if there is an improvement. Thanks Keno

i would recommend replacing the sock thats in the gas tank. my car would cut out when under a load at low rpms. as soon as i replaced it, the problem stopped. its less than 20 dollars i believe and super easy to do. there is a how to you can follow.

That's the EGR...most likely...If you haven't ever cleaned it, this is the problem.

did you see a decrease in your MPG when it was clogged or did you see a MPG increase when you repalced it?

I think i should change mine but its going to be a pain and its my horrible MPG isnt becuase of the sock its definietly the cat.

i didnt see a huge difference. but it is super easy and fast so you should just do it. took me prob 30 minutes.

my screws are really rusted so i want to stop by the dealer and get new ones.

ill save it for the spring. its getting pretty cold out.

And check your PCV. Mine was clogged. I cleaned it and it idled better. Another week later it clogged again. I replaced it (<$3) and she runs great now.
