So hows the automatic?

I saw another post that described the 2 perfectly "the car guys daily driver". It is basically exactly what I am looking for. I picked up a 2010 3s 2.5 6 speed hatch last year as a do everything and its just not doing it for me. For my fun car I need something a bit more hardcore. However for the daily driver I am thinking a Mazda2 Sport with the automatic. This would be my 27th car (have had some autos, lots of sticks) and think the auto would be a better choice as the day to day, a to b car.

So has anyone had the automatic for many miles? What do you think of it? I absolutely despise the clutch and shift quality of my 3 hatch. My second car will be something hardcore and stick shift. I appreciate the opinions, thinking about doing something in the next two days (thank you private bonus cash Mazda!).

We've had a 626 auto and the gf drives a Tribute 2.3 auto (and doesn't drive stick have tried to teach her, hence the 2 auto).

Well...I only have a little over nine hundred miles on my Mazda 2 Touring with the Automatic Transmission...but I have been very pleased with it....very smooth...with easy...or hard acceleration. I have done a variety of driving...from highway to city...and have nothing but good words to say about my 2. (2thumbs)

I’m a delivery driver for a local pizza place. i work about 38 hours a week and drive it quick, and I have nothing to complain about. ZOOM ZOOM. Wish it had a better transmission like a 5 speed ;-) but o-well.

So generally people are happy? Test drove one with my girlfriend tonight and we both agreed it is more comfortable than my 3 hatch (bigger/less bolstered seats and softer ride) and has less twitchy steering. My 3 hatch is a lease so the payments would be higher on the 2 however I would be financing it at 0% and owning it.

We both thought it felt very zippy with the automatic.

My wife and I felt the same way...the 2 was more zippy...more comfortable...more fun than the other vehicles we seriously considered (FIT, Fiesta, Yaris)...and my wife does not do manual transmission. We have been very pleased with our Mazda 2. Keep us posted on your thinking...and your eventual decision.

The shift quality of my 2 is worlds beyond what I've experienced in manual 3's. You should at least test drive a manual 2 to get a feel of that awesome shifter.

Good advise. I have only driven the manual around a parking lot, not a full drive. Maybe I will give that a try tomorrow. I did not pull the trigger today so bye bye $250 bonus cash from Mazda. Hopefully there will still be 0.0% financing and some kind of incentives for April.

Mine is an automatic, I love it though. I think that its a great car, I wish that I knew how to drive stick shift because I would have gotten the stick. It was 3,000 less than the automatic. I like that it is so easy and fun to drive! I wish that I had another!

Well I didnt pull the trigger before the end of last month. Drove the stick around a parking lot again. Need to take one for a long ride. I'll see if the dealer can do anything to make up for the lower incentives this month.

I'm at the same crossroads GrFA. I haven't had a chance to test drive a 2 yet. I am not used to driving a manual, but I'm leaning toward the stick just because the four speed auto seems lack-luster and out-dated. Looking forward to your decision.

That's what I've noticed, probably why Car and Driver made it the official vehicle for their "Save the Manuals" campaign. I learned how to drive a stick, but it's been a LONG time. So I wouldn't say I feel comfortable in a manual quite yet, but I could drive one if I needed to.

Well I spent some time driving the stick today, and must say that I am impressed. It has much better shifter/clutch/throttle control than my Mazda3. I think now I am leaning towards the manual, although still undecided. A lot of the reason I was leaning towards the auto was so that my girlfriend could drive it. I do not know if that is a good enough reason for a car I will be primarily driving for the next few years.

I really think you'll regret it if you go with the automatic. A car with this little power and weight really needs to be wringed out.
