I'll clue everyone in on some other tidbits of info regarding our turbos.
Mazda/Hitachi-Warner have revised the turbo twice since the inception of it on the MS6. The turbo part # reflects this, and currently, the turbo should end with 70ZC, where 70ZA and 70ZB have preceeded it. The 'C' revision has an updated seal design which is beefed up, to prevent oil creeping past the seals and causing the infamous white smoke.
Also, Mazda is 'working' on a PCV fix. I say it loosely because this was supposed to be done at the beginning of Oct., and it never came out. They also had a Mazda Tip On Line (MTOL) 5505 regarding this very issue. The solution was to change the oil to 5w-40, and if the smoking went away, inform the customer a fix was being developed, and hope that it wouldn't return before their next scheduled oil change. This hasn't been the case. I've heard from service managers themselves that Mazda has been authorizing total turbo replacements instead of a second oil change on 5w-40.
Now, the PTP fix is supposed to cure the problem, but it has seen mixed results. I've read up on it across several forums, and it seems to have a generally positive result, but not everyone is fixed by using it.
There are options for upgrading from the K04, but if you're not willing to understand how to safely upgrade the system, then you've got the potential to do some serious damage to your motor. Most GT3071/3076 are externally wastegated, which requires a new mainfold, EWG, and tuning to run correctly. For those that are IWG, you need to port the wastegate to avoid boost creep. There's also a hybrid K04 on the market, which uses the center rotating housing assembly (CRHA) from a T3/T4 turbo to replace the sub-par OEM K04 one. It's a bit pricey, but looks stock when installed.
Rumblefish, no disrespect, just adding some info to the topic.
