Should I buy a Nitro R/C car?

A local dude here is selling his for like $100; I saw his reciept from about a month ago for $300.00. Car is in mint shape; all the "numbers" match. Says he ran it like twice and then decided it wasn't for him.

I did some quick reads on the stuff, found that the engine could blow fairly quick if you don't break it in properly. I don't think he got it to that point.

I've always wanted to get a gas/alky powered R/C car just for s**** and giggles, but I know it will turn into an addiction!!
(not sure if I can afford another car related addiction). I looked at some of the mods available for this thing and I'm sure $1000 is no problem to drop when end game comes around.

So, does anyone on here have a Nitro R/C car or something similar (please, no battery powered stuff - "real" motor driven car owners)? Any comments? Good/ bad/worthwhile? Competition? Racing events...some links perhaps? A community would help quite a bit...

it's pretty fun...but u gotta really take care of ur stuff. otherwise u'll end up having to go back to the hobby shop again and again and spend on parts u could've easily taken care of. meh...and it does get addicting. a quart of nitro costs more than a gallon of gas ! yeesh...that's y i barely run mine.

I wanted to get into that, but it was sooo expensive. Now that i got a job, i might get into r/c airplanes. that looks like a lot of fun too.

I strongly advise against nitro for your first RC car, and after owning several nitro cars I still prefer electric. I'd rather deal with cutting my comm (I have a lathe) every dozen battery packs than all the mess of nitro and compression problems, burnt out glow plugs, etc.

EDIT: btw you sound like you don't know s*** saying "real gas r/c car" as electric r/c racing is where the action is, and its more popular for a reason. I voted that you should do some research.

I have a nitro r/c car...it's a lot of fun, but it's an EXPENSIVE hobby. From fuel, to fixing broken parts, to upgrades, I spend about $35-$50 a month on it.

Have you ever had an RC car before? Fun!! But; a serious Money pit! Doesn't matter if it's gas or electric - their both Money Pits. I sold all of my stuff.

I have a Nitro RS4 - it's a blast, 50mph. Fuel last forever. Parts last longer the better you get at driving it. I still haven't painted my top. Looks don't matter to me, just fun.

Just realize one quick mistake will run you anywhere from 40-200 dollars, depending on what breaks. But yeah, they are a hell of alot of fun. A buddy of mine had one of the dirt track trucks they make, he used to jump that thing off a pitchers mount in a school baseball field. Literally got about 12-15 feet of air, and he could jump it a few times before something would break.

Fun hobby - I say go for it.

I would have to agree w/ toucci on this.After several frustrating issues w/ my Kyosho GP Spider,it finally gave up on me and now it's laid to rest in it's casket(box).Now I just drive simple w/ my TC3.

But if you do decide to get a nitro,get a Traxxas Nitro 4Tec.****** 60mph out of the box,RTR and the best thing is that you don't have to suffer through gay ass pull-starts b/c of the push-button starter.

Heres my whip; a 1/8th scale ofna with 2 speed tranny. This car hauled ass but this has got to be the most expensive hobby out there. If you really get into this, you would really spend over $50 a month a fuel and misc s*** here and there.

But to be honest, the nitro cars a bad ass. You'll have so much fun when its running.
