short throw shifter

I took my stock shifter, cut the bottom between the ball and the bushing hole, welded in a collar to extend it an inch, and bingo! short shifts and stock height! the shorter shifting points are made up below the mounting ball, the height of the shifter from the ball up has no bearing on the distance of the shift to a point! (unless you have a shifter that is two feet high!)(pissed) (gossip)

now thats a cool idea
a bit ballsy..unless you have a refrence point
for the geometry

but thats what i'm talking about
i just ordered the b&m and a tall MOMO knob
if thats to short...chop and weld

good idea

ok so i finally got one. its off ebay... btu tis not the generic t-6 aluminumfor 10 bucks...

its one by a store called tuning pros, it was 40 plus shipping.

got it in yesterday, looks prett nice... feels sturdy. but i wont be able to install until wednsday.... =(

ill elt u all know asap.

My buddy (02' P5 owner) removed the spacer on top of the shifter, and reinstalled the factory noob. 30 min of work, and he got a short shifter. Total cost for the work $0. He is going to do the same thing for my car.

You want the B&M. My wife's P5 has it. Yes, it's lower than stock, but not by much, and it's waaaay higher than my Kartboy. It also has a really nice high-quality feel, short shift action and stock knob threading. We went with a Voodoo knob (which sits pretty low) and it's still pretty tall. Stick with the stock knob or something else tall, and you should be good to go!

Edit: Oh, I see you did get the B&M. Good call. How do you like it?

i want a short throw with the stock hight
who makes that
someone needs to come up with a part that's
truly short throw and not just a cut-down stock geometry
shifter

i'ld buy that

that just makes the shifter shorter. The whole point of the "short throw shifter" is to minimize the throws between gears themselves, not to make the shifter rod shorter. By shortening up the length of the shifter rod, doesn't reduce the length of each throw between gears.

so i installed last night, im in the process of uploading some pictures to the computer...

its only about an inch shorter but they doubled the distance form the ball joint to the linkage... the shift are way short and super duper smooth.

its not all vaselined or whatever the hell the odl one was... so its got a nice metal sound that sounds real cool, like light clicks...

it actually goes into reverse better!!!! =)

the first shift i amde driving it on the test drive i almost s*** myself... it felt so nice....

only problem? the heat shield over the exhaust is in the way... infact, the bottom of the shifter is a half inch away from the resonator... but its not a problem, removed the heat shield for now since it didnt even go all the way forward and protect the shifter all the way anyways...

pics in post to follow!

Is it possible to get the short throw and use the factory boot? Or do you have to get a whole new boot? I'm a big fan of having everything look uniform?

I think the general solution to the heat shield problem is either put some spacers between the chassis and shield (some shifters come with them) or bend the thing down until it clears. Or remove it like you did. :)

You can still use the factory boot but there will be a lot of slack in it. You'll probably want to get one designed for short shifters. TWM has a decent leather boot that, between the stitching options, looks quality enough to be stock. If you replace the boot, I recommend one that's cut specifically for your car since the generic ones never quite look right, IMO.

here's some random pics from the install...

and there u go....
i'm thinking about doing a write up since the old one doesnt work really.

Nice, i think i have found my next project! And is that the factory boot as well?

Patience, man. :)

That's a nice looking shifter. I like how it came with a its own ball joint housing. That probably smooths things out a bit.

It looks like it reuses the plastic bushing from the old shifter's linkage. Is that right?

Kinda shameful that it's all covered up by the boot. Someone really needs to develop something like a flat shift gate for our cars so we can show off a nice shifter.

yes its a factory boot, and it shifts way smoother, and liek i said before i think, it goes into 1st and reverse with no problem... i dindt think the shifter would ahve anything to do with that but i guess so.

and yes i reused the old bushings... i thought about buying aftermarket like kartboy or something... but there is no need...

I might be doing this soon as well. You havn't encountered any problems so far, but can you check in a week or two to see if there is any visual problems on the bottom portion? It rains a whole lot as of lately and dont want to be driving and having my shifter break going into third or somthin.

absolutely i'll let u guys know.

so far not a damn problem... i was installing without any directions and did a couple of unessicary things like almost removed the entire shifter assembly... haha...

but like i said not only are my shifts quicker but some of the little problems we all have with this car went away... and it looks good too!

this was one of my favorite mods ive done. makes it so much fun to drive! now the shifter in my wifes maxima feels as tall the the sears tower! =)

FYI I bought a 30 dollar shifter off Ebay and my bro bought the expensive JDM one for $100. So basically for the extra 70 you end up paying for Bolts a few tools and stickers. All thought I will admit it was a lot easier to put the JDM one on just because we had all the extra s***. With mine we had to ghetto rig a spacer and a couple bolts. The end result, his shift is a lot more tight with less free throw. But to save the extra 70 dollars that could be spent towards my next set of tires I see only gain.

For the record: I had the B&M shifter. The guy who was looking for shorter throw but not a shorter shifter... The B&M is the one you want. Here's a couple pictures of it. I modifed the stock boot, I thought it looked cool and muscle-car-ish personally but it WILL fit all the way to the top. Just remove the plastic stock ring and reverse cable-tie it in place.
