Short shifter "shorter"

Ok guys, this may be the most retarted question you've read in the history of time:

After I installed my B&M short shifter I noticed about an inch increase in height of the rod/knob. I know that the term "short shifter" means it shortens the throw, but after looking at a lot of pics online of peoples short shifters, mine looks kinda high.

I know I have it installed correctly, the end of the rod just about touched the heatshield.

Just an observation..

Perhaps you could take a few shots so we could all get a look at this non-short short shifter? Was it possibly a flaw in the construction so it was a little longer than the normal short shifters perhaps?

I'm not sure. It works great, and I'm totally happy with it. I just wasn't sure if I was "supposed" to lose height, gain height, or have no change at all?

I get some pics tomorrow.

To add to this, after installing the shifter, my stock knob wouldn't fit so I had to run up to checker to get a knob that would fit. I found a leather B&M universal shift knob. It's extremely light, and is a little taller than my stock one. Maybe that's it?

In that case, does anyone know of any shorter/heavier knobs that might be better for a short shifter?:thought:

It's not an illusion, the B&M shifter actually sits higher (~1/2-1" I think) than the stock MP3 shifter. Also, the B&M shifter has a stock Mazda thread rather than the thread used on the MP3 shifter. When I installed my B&M shifter, I also bought a Team Voodoo magnum shift knob. Very heavy and solid feeling. It does get VERY hot  in the Texas sun though.

gee I nearly stuck my foot in my mouth here till I remembered I was in the MP3 forum and the fact that your shifter is different from all the other Pros.....

in the event you want to get a shifter knob that threads on insted of one that uses the set screws to hold it in place the thread pitch of the B&M and the regular pro shifters is 10mm X 1.25

Thanks!!! You two are true saviors.. hehe

Yes, I'm now trying to decide between the Machv OEM Heavy shift knob, and the mazdaspeed leather shift knob on corksport. Since I live in AZ and the sun is out and hot ALL the time, I think buying a metal knob would be a death sentence. hehe:eek:

Aren't our stock shifters leather?

Also, do Kartboy short shifters sit lower than stock mp3 shifters?

yah... they are leather... dont ya feel the heat when the suns been shining right on it?? sometimes its hard to grab... just like the wheel... but there is really NO material that will stay cool in a hot ass car in direct sunlight.. so you just gotta weigh your options :)

It can get warm, but hot HOT like metal does.

Yeah, leather heats up but cools down quickly. Metal heats up much HOTTER, much faster, and doens't cool down half as fast as leather does. I've been branded by hot metal parts in my car, like seriously-I have scars. hehe... I doubt a hot piece of leather could ever cause such of a monstrosity.
;)

The Kartboy shifter does sit slightly lower than the MP3 shifter, it also has a slightly longer throw.

I have had both leather and metal in Texas and the leather gets cooler MUCH faster. There are days when the car has been outside all afternoon in over 95F heat and I can barely hold on to the shifter long enough to make the shift without leaving scarred tissue. That only lasts for about 5-10 min. ;) Overall, I just love the way the metal looks and feels. I have the windows tinted to 35% on the sides, 5% back and with a shade in the front window, there aren't many days that it gets that hot. Maybe if I had a neoprene blue cover, I could use that on days that it is really hot but still have the looks once it cools down (thought) .

The Kartboy shifter sits slightly lower than the MP3 shifter, it also has 20% less throw than the MP3 shifter.

Yeah, sorry about not being clearer... I meant that the Kartboy shifter has a slightly longer throw than the B&M. Sorry for any confusion, we now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
