Both of them from the shifter to the trans.
Trust, it sucks. If you wanna do it right you pretty much need to remove the dash. The first step is to get the cables out of the mounts inside the engine bay. They are bolted down, but the cables themselfs are held on by 2 kinda lock rings. They are just held down by friction.
Next you need to get to the firewall where they pass through, its mounted inside the car. Its at the base of the dash behind the stereo and if im not mistaken the heater core. There are a bunch of items you need to remove but i dont know exactly what they are. Then from there all i can say is good luck. it was a b**** and i cant guarntee you would like using my method.
To see if its your cables, remove them from the trans linkages and see if they are still easy to move around from the shifter assembly. If they are then your cables are not the problem in my opinion.
So remove it from the shifter and the trans. Then test the linkage? I take it that it should slide easy?
I didnt start having issues until my stage 2 sts from twm. I would really hate to put it back to stock.
I will give this a try first though.
