Shift light and Harness pics

As promised, here are some pics of my shift light and Harness

First the light:
AXAS Tuning Shift Light.

This thing only connects to the electrical system thru the cigarette lighter plug. It reads pulses in the electrical system when the coils fire, and you set the dials on the control unit so that the first and last lights come on when you want, and the box interpolates for the two middle lights. Mine is set so green comes on at 4k and red comes on at 6k, with 2 yellow lights between.

Harness
I have a Schroth Rallye 4 harness in the car. Looks like this:

The install was pretty easy. The lap belts are mounted using the stock seatbelt bolt on the left, and the front seat rail rear bolt for the right:

In back, I used the rear seatbelt mounting points inder the rear seat cushion:

There is a buckle that connects the shoulder straps to the rear Y-connection to the left of the above shot which allows the harness to be disconnected and stored under the driver's seat when not in use.

looks good, except for the color of the harness. :p it doesnt really match anything.

I had the pivot shift lamp works the same way, I haven't install it yet.... since is too cold to sit in the garage to do anything....

but scapamouche, mine has only 1 light, how do I know where to turn the knob to and set at what rpm??? (can't read the Japanese instruction.... need some help here.... )

As for the blue harness, uclap, it matched the old car pretty well, and it matches the small tasteful decals I have on my quarter windows. :p

hehe, i appologise. I'm all for recycling. :D

Keep up the good work, I like the shift light, want one myself, but thats pretty expensive. Also having to use the lighter kind of sucks... maybe you could patch it into the wires powering the lighter.

Alan: I'm sure with a little ingenuity, you could wire it into the lighter without having to use the plug. I don't really need the plug for anything else, so I'm fine with it as is.

phantom: I think you'll have to do it the hard way: Rev the engine up to the rpm that you want the light to come on and fiddle with the dial until the light comes on and goes off at the point you want. That's what I had to do with mine. The settings didn't really translate from my old car to the new one. I set the low light, and turned the dial down a bit for the high light, and I just happened to get the last light in a good spot. Best o' luck with it...

scapamouche: thanks for reply. so, did u adjust the knob while you're driving or what? there is only one knob that I can adjust... so how can it tell which gear to light up at certain rpm.... I still didn't get it.... flame me if you wish:)

 :D

I like the Shift light but think it would get annoying having lights blinking in your face for 2k rpms. I am going to get a autometer addon that works by using small rpm pills to tell it where red line is. The shift light is a small as a fountain pen and can mount pretty much anywhere.

As for the harnes I can vouch for the quality and functionality of the scroth systems. They are a big euro car co. They also sell a system called autocontrol so that it has an inertia wheel built into the Y behind the harness to act like stock seatbelts. Much better for daily driving. Had them in my corrado and loved them. You could lean forward without having to undo the whole thing but when you stop fast it locks up just like a normal seatbelt. Has all of the certifications and approvals to pass inspection as well I beleive.

Have you guys ever think about a shift loud tone instead a shift light??

I like that better...

keeping the lights for the other equipment, maybe tones too to the rest....different.

scapamouche:

What angle does the shoulder straps make over the top of the seat? If its more than 45 deg from horizontal, isnt it illegal for auto-x/track days? (worried about spine compression, especially since you dont have a submarine belt)

for AutoX the angle doesn't matter. I think the only rule is it can't be attached to the seat itself. It's fine for autoX, I know a lot of people that do it that way.

The angle is about 30-35 degrees anyway, so they are ok. In fact, the instructions from Schroth tell you to use the attachment points I did use, so they must have found that on the vast majority of cars, the angle is OK. I saw a similar angle on my previous car, despite the fact that it was a Celica GT-S, a VERY different car in internal layout...

Funwagon: The lights don't blink. It's more like the setup you see on Le Mans style sportscars: Each light comes on as the revs go up, and stay on until the revs go back below their setpoint.

Dexter: We really DON'T need it, but when you're autoxing, I use the lights to remind me that I'm getting near the rev limiter: That way I know when the engine is going to stop the fun, and unsettle the chassis. I originally wanted the first light to come on at 3.5k, at the torque peak, but I was reaching that regualrly on the highway, and it was driving me nuts, so I reset it to 4k instead.

Phantom: I did it sitting in neutral, but it would probably work better at speed: more precise. That said, you shouldn't do it alone: Get someone else to actually adjust the knob while you dirve and hold rpms, that way you are MUCH safer... As for the rpm to set it to: I used 8k rpm on my old car (rev limit at 8200) and I'm just after 6k in the MSP. Like I said above, I use the light to tell me when I'm getting close to the rev limiter, so I don't have to keep an eye on the tach. I see the lights out of my peripheral vision, and that way I can keep my eyes up all the time...
