Shift knob from MAZDA3 s 5-Door

It sounds to be the same thread pattern/diameter as a Miata based on comments. Good knowledge sharing.

slamdp5 and others are offering to physically go verify because they don't mind, are excited about the mod, and are closer to dealers. Finishlineperformance.com is selling it for a Miata, so they want to check OUR KNOB ON A MIATA. I really appreciate that.

20% restock fee + shipping on unopened returned parts. No one asked you to and go be certain of fit, so it's not your issue. BTW, $233 is just a starting list price on the part... idiot or not.

Laugh as you wish. I hope that that's not what you spend your time doing on this forum. (no)

slamdp5 and everyone else who is contributing - This is great. Thanks in advance for the info and effort to verify. Let me know.

Well, I'm just trying to share some information and save people some time, but I suppose my attitude should really be that if people don't bother to read a whole thread then maybe they don't deserve to have their time saved. njaremka shared essentially the same info early on in this thread.

There are a few individuals from miata.net that have bought and installed the knob into thier Miata. And, like I said, if it fits a Miata it will fit a Protege. (I have a (Team VooDoo) Miata knob in mine!)

I stepped in to clarify because some people mistakenly thought that this is a stock Miata knob. Maybe I'm weird, but if I were still skeptical about the fit then I would call Finish Line and talk to Tommy to verify. He's a helpful guy and would probably be happy to confirm. Voodoo knobs fit the Miata and the Protege5. The threads are the same. You can then deduct that a shift knob that threads onto the Miata is going to thread onto the Protege5. It's not rocket science.

Mazdastuff lists the retail for the knob with black and silver leather at $70, but sells it for $57. While I don't question that the dealer quoted $233, I do question that as being the actual list price and suspect that they were just trying to make a quick buck. But maybe I'm wrong.

And I'll admit that I do spend a small amount of time on this forum for laughs. It's pretty funny stuff at times.

I think we all know what each other is saying people. Some people want physical verification if it is easy enough. Your info is appreciated. Actually, I called the finishlineperformance fellow yesterday and he could not determine whether it fit a P5. He guessed that it would not.

Agreed... Things do get funny sometimes on the forum. It's great. Let just try not to be critical unless it affects you.

I might be a sarcastic mofo, but at least I'm a helpful sarcastic mofo. ;) But honestly it's a pet peeve of mine when people post questions, info, etc. without bothering to read the thread, and I've seen that a lot around here in my short time on the forum. It reduces the helpfulness of the forum as a whole.

Don't know who you talked to at Finish Line, but ask for Tommy in the future. Ask for Marshall if you call Trussville. These guys both have good reputations in the Miata community.

Just tryin to help out. No 5 spd Miatas, so Oh Well. :)

I did get to try these on today. 19s are huge on a P5 :D

Yes, I would greatly appreciate it if you brave souls kept us updated on whether the Mazda 3/6 shifter is a direct replacement for the P5 shifter.

BTW, what are the differences between the M6 and M3 shifter? I haven't had a chance to look closely at either.

slamdp5 - Thanks for looking. BTW nice wheel, but barely any sidewall.

Dimitrios - Let us know if you end up back at the dealer like you said.

---> Wait a sec, don't we have some members out there with a Miata and a P5? Please try your P5 knob on your Miata (or visa versa) and weigh in on fit.

I'll be back at my dealer in 2 months. If no one confirms/trys it before then, I will have access to their stick Miata in the waiting room on which to try my P5 shift knob.

My P5 shift knob fits on my miata perfectly.

I will go to the Mazda dealer tomorrow to try the 3 shifter knob on my miata.

Since the P5 and miata thread sizes are the same, if the 3 knob fits my miata, it will fit the P5.

I hope this is clear because you people are confusing me. ;)

Wow... it's like logic bordering on being a lawyer or taking the LSAT.

Not sure if it will be necessary for you to visit your dealer.

Although I started the thread with asking whether the $233 (list price) Mazda3 knob would fit a P5, someone posted a link to a $65 knob being sold by Mazda at finishlineperformance.com for the Miata that may be the same as or look similar to that $233 one on the Mazda3.

You provided physical confirmation on the key question of whether the Miata and Protege5 knobs are interchangeable. You provided me the yes. For that, I thank you. It indicates that unless we all missed something, the $65 Miata knob should fit a P5.

:)

Thanks for responding to my PM.

Exactly ZoomFive...

The logic had been brought up a few posts back.....more like GMAT than SATs :p

The $65 unit will fit the Miata
The stock Miata knob will fit the Pro5.
Therefore, the $65 unit will fit the Pro5 also.

Sounds like a group buy :D

My P5 knob fits fine on my roommates Miata. All Mazda's, except the 2nd gen RX-7's use the same thread pitch; M10x1.25. Just as an FYI... I'm interested in getting this knob, too; The GReddy counterweight proves to be a tad too chilly in the mornings. =)

flat_black: you aren't kiddin; the KartBoy is so f'in cold in the morning...ugh....

I vote attempt for group buy; I'll fire off a phone call or email tommorrow.

You guys want to be mechanically capable? Learn to use a tap and dye. You can make anything with threads fit anything else. Geez, my B&M had no fitable inserts. I put one in the vice, drilled it out, tapped it to the right thread and screwed it on. 10 minutes; nothing to it. Amaze your friends and neighbors!

The sedans and the P5 use a shift lever with an M10 x 1.25 thread as flat_black states. The MP3 shift lever uses an M8 x 1.25 thread. My understanding was that the MP3 and MSD use the same shift lever so that the MSD also uses the M8 x 1.25 thread. I'm not sure about this now so MSD owners ought to check before buying a knob that fits the P5 and Miata.

I called Rosenthal this morning and they will NOT extend any further discounts on this knob based on the price stating the price is already lower than other parts departments, regardless of how many additional buyers there are. I explained the benefits of a GB to them, appreciation by the Mazda community, offered the idea of shipping to one location, and etc - they said no discounts for this knob.

Sorry folks. I tried.

I e-mailed Mazdaformance to see if that have that shift knob, since it's not listed on their site. If anyone gets the knob, please post about it. Thanks!

Let me end this right now. Please see pics below. My 2002 P5 with Mazda 3 shift knob. Thank you.
