Shark fin antenna should be soup

I wish my 2015 CX-5 had a real FM antenna. I usually listen to college/public radio. In my area they are not all high powered and their transmitter sites may not be on the big hill with the high tower. I had no problem with my Mazda 5 whip antenna. Now I get some drop out where certain stations were strong before. This shark fin is not an improvement. I wish I could screw in a whip like on my Mazda 5.

I actually like it, but I don't have any reception issues.

Shark fin antenna is for Sat radio. The FM antenna is in the back glass. Should have a strong signal since it is amplified, but I have noticed that the old simple mast antennas tend to work the best.

Also note that if a cheap metallic based tint is applied to the glass, it can kill the signal strength.

That's interesting. I don't use the sat radio, and would love to get rid of this thing, it gets in the way cleaning snow and washing the car. Anyone knows if it can be removed and some sort of cover placed instead?

Not sure on the Mazda, but on other cars I've pulled them off (usually to install or replace an antenna) there will be two bolt holes and a larger hole or square cutout to allow plugs to fit through. Could be covered, but you would have to fab something up. Probably a lot of trouble to make it look decent.
