Greetings,
I have a 97 Protege, 1.5L, AT.
Car came from Michgan originally and I have been replacing all the rusty parts to make it better.
Recently I got around to swapping the steering knuckles/hubs. Pulled the replacement hub assemblies from an Escort so I could get larger brakes/rotors in the process. The left side input shaft is stuck in the left hub (probably rusted) and no amount of pulling/soaking in PB/using 3-jaw pullers is getting the drive shaft loose from the hub. Therefore, as I already have the replacement hub, I'm going to pull the hub/driveshaft on the left as an assembly and thought I'd replace the right side since I'm going to have to drain the AT fluid anyways. I read that I could probably get the left side shaft out of the tranny by taking the right out and using a screwdriver/hammer to tap the input shaft out of the tranny.
So, here's my question: my Pro has a single piece driveshaft on the right...and I was wondering if I could replace that with one having an intermediate shaft and shorter CV joint to make it more equal with the left side to reduce torque steer. All the Proteges I saw at the JY have intermediate shafts while the Escorts all have single shafts instead on the passenger side.
Can I get one of the two-piece shafts instead of a single one, and, does it matter if the donor Protege has either a MT or AT?
TIA.
