Screech sound on hard acceleration- has anyone actually identified source?

i get this noise also , i had a a mazda tech in my car once and he said it was normal, and that his mr2 does it also.
it can happen just about any speed as long as your high rpm (4000+) for me . ive had it happen at 40mph and 125mph .
i dont really know enuff about it but im with the bearing under load therory. acceleration is normal but as crappy as the hoses are who knows

rocketspeed- bring on over to albany, I'll look at it for you.

Albany's a little far, but thanks for the offer. I don't have a lot of spare time, unfortunately.

Rocket, i'm in Salem, MA.

With the Holidays, it's tough, but I might be able to hook up with you in the Burlington area after work sometime, for a quick test drive to compare notes.

I don't have the screetch, so you could get a frame of reference off of my car.

Salem is a lot closer! After the holidays we can compare notes.

Could be just the thing breaking in, I suppose- I've only been getting on it now for a week or so, since I passed 1k miles. Prior to that I babied it.

Its been hard to get any traction with the roads all covered in snow/ice/salt/sand/water, particularly with the snow tires.

Yeah, just shoot me an email. I actually had tonight free up, for what it's worth.

Traction has been a pia. Especially when I'm running high perf. all seasons.

Making it around, though.

rocket, I'm in Newton and I travel up 128 to got to Lynnfield everyday. I'm new to turbos (and performance cars in general) but I can lend you my ears if you like.

Also, there's a guy named Jose that works at the 128 dealership...nice guy (he works with the body shop there) and he may be able to help as well. I met him when I took my car there to get the new bushings.

The tech that works on MSP's is named RAY..he's older, he's a nice guy, and would most likely try to help you out as well. From what i've learned the t25 is a good turbo. just small, and may wear down at 25k to 30k miles if used hard so keep and eye on it..

Cheers

I bought mine at Ira up in Danvers. I'm going to let them take a crack at it first. I'm not particularly worried so long as its running well. If it breaks, they can fix it.

I'm not having any trouble getting around in the snow with the Blizzaks, I steam through it like a truck. Problems I'm having are when I want to rip around in the car fast once the roads are clear- the tires constantly break loose accelerating because of the salt/sand water everywhere and you can't take corners too fast because its so easy to slide. Clamps down on the fun factor a bit.

Anyway, its still a fun little machine to drive. Can't wait for summer!

mine stopped doing it after i got a downpipe

Mine has recently stopped doing it as well. The only time I ever noticed it though was in 5th and doing over 85mph. It was very inconsistent about when it would do it, and I know that the sound was not the normal whine or whistle that a turbo should make. It was more like the sound of a piece of metal being grinded on a grinding wheel. I was very concerned on one roadtrip in particular, it did it for like 80 out of the 120 miles that I drove. But just recently, I drove about 400 miles and didn't hear it once.

I have never noticed any decrease in performance, and nothing has broken yet in 18,000 miles. But I really hope that it does not come back, because the sound is not healthy at all.

Mine only does it for a fraction of a second to maybe a second or two max and I have not yet noticed it in 4th or 5th, but definately in the first three.

It doesn't sound healthy to me either, which is why I raised it as a concern. I've ridden in a number of turbo cars and never experienced anything like it previously.

mine makes this noise as well. usually once in a while and only pulling out of parking lots after i have gone in to the store to get something and I don even get on it just pulling out and taking off under 2000 rpms and it goes away quickly and I can never make it happer just happens every once in a while. weird s*** I know if i take it in they will say they can't hear a dam thing so they really can't fix anything until they hear something and this just happens every once in a while no pattern to it. Except being it pulling out of parking lots and just came out to the store.

I hear a random screeching as well. There's no oil or coolant leaks...oil & coolant stay full. No boost leak as far as I can tell either.

I have the same problem you are talking about..Happens mostly in 1st and 2nd around 4000RPM's..Someone please find out what this is..It is intermittent and I doubt I can duplicate it for a dealer..It definitely sounds turbo rrelated but I doubt it is a leak, sounds more like a friction caused vibration..

This is not a problem...it is a normal trait of a ball bearing turbo.

If this is normal for a BB Turbo then why cant I find info on this happening on other cars with BBs? I have searched google and a few other sights and come of with very little. Can you state the source of your info? I would love to hear the guys from twins turbo say this is normal ;) Or any other vendor or reviewer thats well known for that matter.

If fact is, it still has me freaked and I took mine to the dealer and made the mechanic ride with me to hear it. He did and when we got back he called the Mazda tech line and they said it was normal. But they thought the hesitation was normal at first also.

i have a friends with supras that use ball bearing setups and they have the same noise. nothing is wrong with the turbo doing this.

BUMP!

Just the other day I noticed a new sound from under the hood. It is the screech. When the car is stone cold it's almost like a bad belt sound when you rev it a bit. If you let the car sit for 15-30mins after it's fully warm, then get back in and go, the screech appears once you hit boost. The odd thing is that it only does it the first 3 or 4 times you get into boost, then it quiets down to the normal whistle. I checked for obvious leaks or cracked hoses, none seen but I'm no tech. Oil level in the car is good. So....WTF?

i get this very high-pitched sound as well under load. it doesn't sound really mechanical, but more electrical, like something you would hear from a tv or radio or something..hard to explain i guess. but its very high pitched and only lasts a few seconds when its fully spooling...
