Scratched clear coat backing into garage

I just bought a CX-5 GT two days ago. Our garage situation is awful in our condo, with barely enough room to turn into it. I accidentally rubbed the back right corner on the wall while backing in. The clear coat has a series of light scratches on that corner.

What's my best course of action here, to get it back into top shape? I figure clear coat is probably the easiest paint issue to fix, but I don't want to mess it up. I've seen how-to's showing people rubbing something light or dark into the scratches and then sanding down until they are gone.

Help! :(

Without pictures, it's very hard to even guess. How certain are you that it's ONLY the clear coat that was scratched?

If it's extremely light, you might be able to get away with just an aggressive polish. More than that, and you'll have to wet sand. However, I'd leave wet sanding to the pros - it's just too easy to sand away too much.

On a 2 day old car? I'd find a reputable detail shop and see what they can do with it.

yeah I agree with you both. Now to find a good shop for it. I'm not 100% sure it's only clear coat - actually looking at it further, I think there is at least one scratch that hit the paint. thanks

There is a belief that if you can feel the scratch with your finger nail when moving your finger across it, then it has to be a body shop or paintless repair specialist (assuming you have these in the US) such as Chipsaway.

However if you rub your finger nail across the scratch and cannot feel any edges then the scratch is likely light enough to cut out with something like Poorboys SSR,

Well, you can get touch up paint for like $10 at the stealership. It may look a little globby when applied but will even itself out overtime.

Costco has a set of 3 touch up pens (like a marker) that work on clear coat. Clean and apply one or two coats. Looks ok.

FYI here's the scrape. Taking it into the dealership tomorrow:

That's pretty ugly. You're no doubt into the color coat. Good luck!

Just curious if you tried rubbing compound? I backed into a pole with a rental car once and rubbed it all out.

Sounds like yours is an actual scratch though. Worth a try I guess.

yeah I think mine's to the paint, looking closer. I bought some RC but I am afraid to try it. I'll post the cost after Friday....
