Say hello to my lil freind!!

thanks for the advice. The haltech is already tuned by juan at high boost for the msp with a bigger turbo. I will have to do some dyno tuning before i really start looking for power, but for the first 800-1K miles i will not see any boost.

Oh and fyi i didnt blow my motor because of boost last time man. I had an oil consumption problem and my rod bearing spun. (boom06)

I hope for the sake of that new block and your wallet, you take the time to inform yourself on how to get the best performance out of your new engine.

Also, I've never heard of not taking a car into boost levels for the fist 800-1000miles... that's called an EASY BREAK-IN and will prevent your piston rings from seating themselves correctly in the piston sleeve. Read up on it here - I swear this is a must to follow when breaking in a fresh engine.

You might be asking yourself why I sent you to a site that covers motorcycles, but the guy says it's the same procedure for a car. I trust him, he does lots of research, he doesn't always agree with the experts, hell he almost shoots down his own theories but after reading more and more, he only wants to assure the reader that while an expert may tell you to run the break-in like the factory tells you, experience and testing will always give you better results. The guy takes engines apart like we take a piss. And don't use synthetic for atleast 1500 miles on the fresh block!!!

Ok, well i am just relaying to all what Nick (perfworks) the guy who built my motor told me. He said the important thing was to vary rpms not boost levels. He said 5-30 oil all year around

change oil at 200 miles and at 800.

let engine crank for 20 sec. with out any fuel or spark.

And tthat was about it.

Just so you know, I'm not the type of person to knock someone's intelligence, or question someones methodologies, but I felt it would be appropriate to share the knowledge I have gained from this individual. Not only has he dispelled quite a few myths, when it comes to engines, but he has given proof that what he is saying and what the "pro's" are saying is close, but not the same, the pro's always come back to a gentle break-in. When I read his writing, he makes it painfully clear that over revving a engine and under revving an engine are bad for break-in practice. What you want is varied LOAD, over the rpm range. I encourage you to look over his website and seriously take into consideration the information he has available. If you already have, then disregard this rant.

I'm just curious as to how many people break-in their engines, how they do it, and what experiences they have as a result of how they break them in. Even if unrelated, I'd like to know the number of people who were young/or not and bought this car, being their first NEW car, and have had the idea of breaking-in a an engine completely slip there minds. A blown engine will result from a bad break-in, I'm sure of it, it just depends on the amount of time before it busts.

Just my 2 cents... sorry for ranting!

BTW, changing oil at 200miles is an excellent idea, the amount of metal shavings in your oil filter is pretty insane at that point due to the break-in process. I changed my oil at 50miles.... roughly 100km. At 5000, I will probably put synthetic...

My first car ever was a brand new 2003 Protege5 and i floored it 30secs after i left the dealership's lot. I never went easy on the gaz and the car still runs perfectly at 32000km. I knew i wasnt going to keep for very long so i didnt really care (i am picking up a 2003.5 MSP tonight after 15 months with the P5). I will take good care of the MSP though, but i don't think a bad break-in automaticaly means the engine will die right away. i'mm sure that's not what you meant, but 3h of sleep / night just isnt enough for me to understand what im reading. i just want to make sure hehe

Thanks for the tip regarding oil changes though, i'll do that.

yeah but thats a stock car, our stock engines does not need break-in like a new rebuilt motor.
When I first blew my engine and had to rebuilt I went easy for...2,000 miles...

hey black rob00, how do you attach thumbnails like that?
go to reply, at the bottom of the page it says "Manage attachments" then u upload it from there

how much was the block, if I am not mistaken you had perfworks do the work,

correct me if I am wrong........

Ok, so stock engine doesnt need break in. Even the MSP for exemple ? The turbo doesnt change anything ... so i can start having fun right away ? hehehe =)

yeah perfworks (nick) did the work for me. 400 for the block 175 for the crank 1310 for rods/pistons. SO all together 1885 plus 650 to assemble it.

Stock engines needs a break-in, it doesn't matter what engine.... it needs a break-in. Rebuilds probably don't need it, but if you are changing rings, pistons, sleeves etc, then yes a break-in is required. Turbo doesn't change much except put load sooner in the RPM's. YES, you can start having fun right away, just don't go high in the revs - 6000-7000 bad. Vary your rev's and put load on the engine, go up your favorite hill with the gas PEGGED, don't try this by peeling away in first, give it good load, shift nice and easy, then put it second, give it gas, nice load, put in third and peg the gas to the floor, but stop the rpm's shy of 5500rpm or 5000rpm if you want to be on the safe side.

Don't be easy on your car during break-in or else things won't seat properly. Going through 25miles of bumper to bumper traffic is not the way to break your engine in. Take it through nice windy hills, running it through the gears with good LOAD. Your motor will thank you.

Follow this link, the guy has something really intersting to say about breakin in an engine! http://www.fjr1300.info/breakin.html

Ciao!

Sounds like a great project for your spring break. You staying in AA for spring break? Also, I saw a yellow mp3 last weekend down Washtenaw, is that your friend's car? Nice block very cool dude, good luck with it.
