Sand or Rocks in Muffler??

I just received an HKS Hi-Power axle-back for my P5 that I bought used from a forum member. So everything is clear from the start, the part was received in expected condition and the seller was awesome to deal with.

When looking over the piece, I noticed a rattling sound coming from inside the canister and it is definitely sand or small, loose gravel that has been caught inside the muffler. I tried shaking it and got some pieces out but there is still some stuck inside. It's not a lot of sand so we're not talking about a sand-filled canister or anything...probably enough make a small pile in the palm of your hand.

I am going to try compressed air when I get to work on Friday but does anyone have any ideas about a good way to get the sand out? Has anyone had this problem themselves? If I am unable to get it all out, do you guys think it will rattle like crazy with the car running/exhaust vibrating? Will it cause any damage or premature wear on the muffler?

Any help, ideas, tips, or advice would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

I managed to get out in 2000 after being stuck there for 12 years and I would never go back

Worst invention ever? Swamp Coolers:(

Yep...swamp coolers are the worst. I was lucky enough to live in an apartment for about a year that had refridgerated air and that straight up kicked ass. That's how Arizona does it, no swamp coolers out there as far as I know, no wonder we New Mexicans are considered residents of a 3rd-world country that happens to be attached to the U.S.

So, you wouldn't happen to know how to effectively get sand out of a muffler canister, would you?

I would duct tape a shopvac hose to one end, and then up end the muffler and just shake in all directions to get the stuff loose, allowing the vac to help suck it out. Possibly the sand may come out one side easier than the other.

that's a pretty good idea and I have a shopvac so I might give it a try if the compressed air at work tomorrow doesn't work out.

Its more then likely bits of carbon and whatnot. i pulled my exhaust off the other day, and my muffler had what sounded like pebbles in it as well. It might also be the sound deadner in it that broke down after a while. You should not have to worry about it,

thanks for the peace of mind, i was kinda worried about how effective it was going to be if it was the inside of the muffler breaking down.
