I will spare the details.....long story short. Please read the thread above.

After deliberation I am really beginning to wonder if I may be better off buying a Protege with a blown engine and swapping in all my good KLDE stuff.

I have read most of what I need to do, but I havent really come across the best year models to do it to? Anyone? Bueller?

And................HELLO!

Thanks:)

There are some extremely knowledgeable guys on this site that I'm sure could help you if you decide to move forward with a protege swap. From what I've read the wiring is the hardest part of the swap. Especially if you're keeping it OBDII as opposed to just running a megasquirt or something.

As far as the "best" years, my opinion would be 2001-2003.5. The 99/00 are fine, but IMO the 01+ has a better interior. The protege5's are great to if you're into wagons.

From what I remember, finding a non ABS car makes things easier with wiring, and if its already a 5speed that helps too.

Thanks!

So far as wiring goes, at least from the searches I did. I would reuse the engine harness and run it through the existing hole I would pull the Protege harness out of.

Whooooole lot more traffic here....lol

Cool, subbed. I'm currently looking at getting a decent running '93 mx6 for the kl to rebuild and swap into my P5. 190k 5spd They want like 800 for it. I offered them $400 haha. Waiting on a reply. And I'd definately get a wagon if possible. Form and function.

Lol. Don't sub to this. I am going to make a thread here soon. Basically Ive made the decision to make this a long term project. Have it done within a year or so. First step.........gut it. Lol

The decision to swap the Probe components to a Protege really depends on your skill level, available time and dedication. While the KL will fit the Protege without any modification, you have to swap the harness and you also have to consider the engine bay space available after the KL swap. Personally, I think it would be easier to swap the KL and other components to another Probe or even an KL Mx6 since those cars were designed with the KL in mind to begin with and you would more than likely not need to swap the harness depending on what year the car is. However, if you feel that you have the skill to do this, a swap into a Protege would be a badass build (one that I've considered before but don't have the time to do) and, imo, would be 10x more fun to drive than a Mazdaspeed Protege mainly because of the low end torque.

Btw, if you're interested in getting another Probe and are close to Nashville, TN, I have my 93 PGT up for sale for $700: http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701316791

Well, thank you for the input. You make several good points. I wont puff my online persona up to tell you all the cars I have built or tinkered with, but suffice to say....this is a project I know I can do, with some help from the community....I am far from a know it all....lol.

The decision to move to a Protege was a hard one, but easy too. Several reasons...1. the community...much more welcoming and up to date...im not buping threads which have been dead for 5 years. 2. the car....tons of them made, market is there and the community.

Honestly the warm welcome I got here is amazing. The probe guys are too, but so few of them. It was a hard choice but given all that....was a no brainer.
