Has anyone fitted or tried to fit an Rx-8 throttle body?

They seem to be very available as unfortunately a fair few Rx-8's have missed there oil top up... (headshake

Think it would be a good/easy/cheap mod and might have a go at it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but flow is not the bottleneck in this engine. It's just a matter of being a tiny engine. I/H/E is only giving people about what, 5-6HP total?

a little more air in cant do any harm though and every last horse counts.
Even if it doesnt make much or any difference im reletively new to modifying so im keen to try a few things (cool)

I'm not familiar with the TB's on RX8's but those on RX7's are very big compared to the 2's. Typically one adds a larger TB to increase the flow of air to modified engines because they draw more aire than originally planned at higher engine speeds, which results in a slight loss in power at lower engine speeds. Inlet velocity dictates power on the intake side. More velocity = more power. Unfortunately, for a given mass flow rate velocity is inversely proportional to area, so bigger area means less velocity means less power. I'd be concerned you'd loose power in the 2, assuming you can find a why to bolt it on and get the electronic throttle to work properly.

blew me out the water there, i wish it was as simple as more air = more zoom zoom. I have a lot to learn.

I am pretty sure the throttle plate is bigger than the whole throttle body on a Mazda 2. I think the closest throttle body size for the bolt pattern is the 2.0 model from the 3 but we have never tried it to be sure.

The only reason I though rx8 is because the design looks similar (I'm not the most technically minded (shrug) )
Struggling to find 2.0 Mazda 3 throttle body over here in UK.
The plan is to take off and give it a good port and polish instead.

But you aren't going to make any power and will waste your time, as you have been told. So why bother? Why not get an intake or header that may make an extra 2-3hp?

We don't know for sure, so it's not a waste of time. However as stated, the problem isn't with air restriction on this engine. It's one thing if you can pull a TB from a wrecked car yourself and get it for on the cheap. But trying to source one from a wrecker is not a smart investment. Also unless you're going to do before/after dyno pulls, what's the point? $100-$150 for 1-2hp is not a smart investment.

Thank-you I'll look into those options. Once I get an idea in my head I just can't let go (silly)

I'll maybe have a go myself one day if I'm bored. Don't know of anyone over here in Scotland that would do that but then again I haven't really looked (boom06) and can't send tb away as the 2 is my daily

I wouldn't attempt to do this if your not a machinist. You can screw up your car very easy. Why don't you find a scape yard and pull the tb your self to save money and send it off?

Anyone over the UK look up the part# from the 1.6 Mazda 3 throttle body to see if it is different? You may be able to pick one up second hand and it could be larger.

I have some knowledge and a good workshop at my work that I can use :) I'll look around the local scrapyards for a 2 just incase though :D

I looked at them initially however they are not an electronic tb (previous gen 3's anyhow, couldnt see any current gen's..)

Look at the current gen, the Mazda 2 intake we sell fits the 1.6 Mazda 3s.
