TPMS went off in the car on Wednesday. I checked all four tires and eventually found one with a big nail embedded deep in the tread. These were the stock Bridgestone RE-040s (225/45/18) that came with the rims when I purchased them. All four needed replacing so I knew Discount Tire wouldn't fix the tire with the nail in it. I had these rims professionally painted back in April and they've held up great up to this point.

So I went to buy some new tires Thursday. Got them mounted and found damage on three of the four rims when I got them back. Manager has been really good about things since I told him specifically to be careful with the rims since I had them painted not too long ago. He said the beading process is what caused the paint chip/flake off. I don't quite remember all that he said during the explanation since I was furious and trying to think of a fair resolution. So basically I either got a mediocre paint job or Discount Tire was too careless. Probably a combination of both IMO.

Anyways, I'm getting upgraded from the Falken 912s (225/45/18) to the Hankook Ventus V12s (235/40/18) and will get free mounting balancing. Manager was going to pay for 50% of the repairs (which would've been probably around $100 - $150), so I think the upgrade on the Hankooks and waiving the the M&B fee is sufficient. I originally had them mount the Falkens because they got great reviews and were on clearance ($108 a piece), but they winded up looking stretched and didn't have any rim guard protection. In comparison, the stock Bridgestones didn't look as stretched and had great rim protection. I'll bring the rims in on Monday or Tuesday to get PC'd and will hopefully have them back by week's end. I'm hoping there won't be any damage to the rims when I bring them in to have the Hankooks mounted.

CN: Rims got damaged during mounting of new tires; going to get them powdercoated instead of being fixed; manager upgraded tires from Falken 225/45/18 to Hankook Ventus V12s 235/40/18 and will waive mounting and balancing fee.

Here are some pics of the damage. Tires have been dismounted so they're ready for sandblast, powdercoat, and clearcoat. Stay tuned for pics of when I get the rims back from PC'ing and when the tires are mounted.

In all honesty its looks like it was more the paint shops fault. The metal doesn't even look clean where it chipped.

Yeah...unfortunatley it wasn't done right the first time. Hopefully the PC will be a lot more durable.

From the picture it doesn't look there was a primer before the paint.

Paint can't stick to aluminium because aluminium is sweating alumine and that's why they need to be seal before painting with a good primer.

Sorry if it sound wierd, but i'm a french trying to explane something in english :)

I've mounted tires on wheels that were painted the night before and not chipped the paint. A lubed tire will slide over even a weak paint job, as long as the paint isn't already chipped. Those marks are from the tire machine contacting the wheel, not from the tire. The metal bead breaker shoe and the tire mounting foot shouldn't touch the wheel during the entire mounting/dismounting process. If they do the machine isn't setup right, the person using it isn't using it right, or the machine is worn out. Not trying to step on discount tire's toes here, just stating facts.

Thanks for chiming in destrux. I really hope Discount won't mess up this next time. I just dropped off the rims to get PC'd. Should have them next week some time.

thats the tire shops fault, looks exactly like what happened to my aftermarket rims
and the bad thing is, i didnt even notice it happen, i was WATCHING them put each tire on the wheel and i didnt notice it until like 2 weeks ago that they really ****** one wheel up around the lip like ur second pic
except my rims were considerably more then yours so i was pretty pissed

Powder coat should chip off like that and if it does, tell Discount Tire to learn how to mount tires
