Valid points all around. It seems there are 2 issues.
1. Dealer Rust proofing:
2. Why lease a Speed.
- I bought the rustproofing from the dealership. I was skeptical as well, and have done plenty of research on aftermarket stuff (oil etc.)
-The stuff the dealer uses is a wax like substance. It doesn't drip or smell like the oil or asphalt stuff. You can also park in your driveway after having it done, unlike oil.
-the stuff is a 1 time applicaton that is guaranteed for the life of the car. If it chips off, the dealer fixes it for life. So, you don't need yearly applications like Krown or Rust Check.
-there is no drilling of the panels like the oil to spray the stuff into. I was told aftermarket drilling could actually affect the perforation warranty and doing so could actually promote rust (like someone here said)
I plan on keeping the car a long time. I am on a lease for Financial reasons. As such, getting rustproofing from the dealer made sense for me as i may very well need the warranty at some point, the less aftermarket $hit you do the better when dealing with warranty IMHO.
As for the lease, like i said, i plan on buying the car when my lease is up (4 years) and i needed the lowest payment possible.
If i was planning on handing the car back after a 3 year lease, i would have said screw the rustproofing, screw the extended warranty, let the next owner deal with it.
It all depends on how long you're planning on keeping the car, and oh yeah, rust is a far bigger problem for us northern folks as well. I came from an Acura Integra that i had the wheel wells cut on two occasions. I need all the rust proofing i can get thank you very much.
