jsut wanted to get some opinions on rust proofing from the dealership ?

is it actually worthwhile to get it ? its just over 600 bones (cdn) (get half back if/when i return the car)

thx.

Depends on where you live. But probably not since it sounds like you are leasing the car and there should be a corrosion/rust-through warranty that is far beyond the lease terms.

thx.

please tell me you aren't going to lease a protege. It's not worth it, look at the depreciation. Maybe on a MSP, but even then, I think you would be better off leasing a nicer car.

My friend Ben leases his Lexus 2003 GS300 for $440 a month(36mo.), with nothing down. And that is loaded with chrome rims and GPS/DVD.

I agree. Do not lease an econobox. First rule of buying/leasing a car:

1. Anything that the dealer wants you to do, you do not want to do. This goes for leasing. Dealers LOVE to lease cars.

And NO, do not get the rustproofing on a car you are going to have for three years. Besides, you can get better rustproofing for LESS aftermarket.

thx for the advice/feedback! its what i gathered, pretty much a rip from the dealership and you can get better/same from aftermarket places for less.

leasing MSP for 4yrs btw.

i wouldn't even have thought to do rp on an econo protege.

thx again

almost all new cars have rustproofing from the factory...don't let them fool you. Your warrantee covers the rust anyway.

From what Ive read on the subject, avoid any aftermarket, ie. non factory, rust proofing. They will drill holes in your body panels to apply the rust proofing that they plug up. Often times, due to normal expansion and contraction of the metal and the normal road vibrations from driving the car, those plugs will fall out leaving a source for moisture to get inside the panels which will actually lead to more rust. In addition, why would you want to spend the money on a leased car, especially a performance car(I wouldnt want to add any unnecessary weight to the MSP)

BINGO. BINGO. BINGO.

And yes, even some aftermarket rustproofing actually increases your chance of rust. The secret is to buy a car that, from the factory, comes with effective rust protection through the use of high-quality stainless steel, thick paint, and factory rustproofing. Look at how long Benz's and Bimmers can go without rusting. I have seen Mercedes' that are 20 years old without a spot of rust.

Valid points all around. It seems there are 2 issues.

1. Dealer Rust proofing:
2. Why lease a Speed.

- I bought the rustproofing from the dealership. I was skeptical as well, and have done plenty of research on aftermarket stuff (oil etc.)
-The stuff the dealer uses is a wax like substance. It doesn't drip or smell like the oil or asphalt stuff. You can also park in your driveway after having it done, unlike oil.
-the stuff is a 1 time applicaton that is guaranteed for the life of the car. If it chips off, the dealer fixes it for life. So, you don't need yearly applications like Krown or Rust Check.
-there is no drilling of the panels like the oil to spray the stuff into. I was told aftermarket drilling could actually affect the perforation warranty and doing so could actually promote rust (like someone here said)

I plan on keeping the car a long time. I am on a lease for Financial reasons. As such, getting rustproofing from the dealer made sense for me as i may very well need the warranty at some point, the less aftermarket $hit you do the better when dealing with warranty IMHO.

As for the lease, like i said, i plan on buying the car when my lease is up (4 years) and i needed the lowest payment possible.

If i was planning on handing the car back after a 3 year lease, i would have said screw the rustproofing, screw the extended warranty, let the next owner deal with it.

It all depends on how long you're planning on keeping the car, and oh yeah, rust is a far bigger problem for us northern folks as well. I came from an Acura Integra that i had the wheel wells cut on two occasions. I need all the rust proofing i can get thank you very much.
