Rust spots appearing in bodywork

Just finished the first really big clean up since winter and have noticed little rust spots appearing through the paint. These aren't where the rock chips are, but are appearing along the doors and lower rear panels on both sides. The main back hatch emblem has one too. I. Am. Pissed! (pissed)

2006 5GT Platinum Silver Metallic, with just less than 20,000 kilometers on it. I'll be paying a visit to the dealer when it opens tomorrow (bible belt town, dealers are closed on Sundays, guess the dealers are too busy confessing).

Anybody else have this happening?

It's probably not the car rusting

I'm 90% sure this is iron particles from airborne pollution. In many instances cars are stored near railroad tracks. As trains move over tracks iron dust gets airbone and magnetically adheres to car body. This is one of the reasons to clay bar your car. It's not the car. Where are you located?

Cars consistently parked in certain areas of Hershey get owned by emissions from these... mostly to the East. They're like the tiny 'rust spots' as I experienced on my 5 at delivery, but a bit wider. Thankfully I'm not one of them. In fact, I think I heard a few years ago they raised a fuss over it because the accumulation of chocolate soot on the roof of the factory was some kind of fire hazard?

But I agree, clay bar turned my paint at delivery from sandpaper'ish feeling to glossy and smooth as glass. The stuff works wonders.

I'm in Kelowna BC. The air is pretty clean up here, and there is only one almost unused rail line. I can't see any on the roof, only below the windows. The one on the emblem is coming through the chrome. It's definitely rust. You might be right about the rest. I can feel that they are raised off the surface, but can't remove them with a finger nail, or I'm not trying hard enough. They are about the size of a period (.). I tried taking a picture, but they don't show up with my 5 mega pixel camera. I'll get one of these clay bars and have a go at it.

The amount of rock chips I have is unbelievable. The front of my car looks like it been sandblasted, same with the windshield. Tiny pockmarks all over it. Paint quality is definitely low compared to the Hondas that I've owned in the past.

Any recommendations on a brand for the clay detailing?

3M Clear Bra This stuff aint cheap, but I've read that it works really good and it doesn't ruin your finish like a leather "LeBra" would. I think it's supposed to last about 7 or 8 years.

Get the spots off first if you can with the clay bar ( mothers or any you find at the autoparts store ) if that don't work try going to www.autopia.org and sign up , then ask questions about your problem. Someone will come up with a answer that can help you. But also try the dealer, but look out because they will say it's fallout and might not help you out. Good luck

3m clear bra guaranteed for life of car. So the dealer tells me anyways. Guess they do not expect me to keep it for 15 years but that is my plan when it comes to cars ;)
Bubbling, pealing, discolouration all guaranteed. They simply remove it and put on a new one.
The little rust spots on the emblems. I have a coworker with a Protege and he has had that thing replaced like 4 times. It just keeps happening. Heck even the Mazda 5 I saw in the showroom had a messed up emblem!! Looked like it was corroding.

I thought about a product like that. If I did, then I would have a rock chip free zone along the leading edge of my hood. There are chips over the entire airdam, halfway across the hood, and the entire windshield. I would need one heck of a clear bra!

Clay bar the entire car, and then put the 3m clear covering on the vehicle. The clay will work miracles. The best clay comes from Griots garage, it costs more but it works a lot better. It is never too late :).

FYI the rear hatch outer skin is plastic and it does not rust....

You need your car to be claybarred and that is all.... the rust is from your brake shoes which is common out here

How many washes during the Winter? I try to get my cars washed up whenever possible. The mag-chloride around here is bad for the paint. It takes the wax right off!

I do a lot of highway driving, and while we didn't get a huge amount of snow this year, the roads get quite filthy, which in turn mucks up the car. I ended up getting the cars cleaned at least once a week, and sometimes twice. Normally I wash by hand, but during winter I use a car wash as it's just too bleeding cold. It's a touchless wash, and they towel dry the car after.

I can understand these spots being deposits from the rotors, but confess I've never seen anything like them before. Mind you all my previous cars have been dark blue or red, and I may have just never seen them.
