no the hood(shocked)
where on the hood?? i had rust on mine only because the previous owner had put an aftermarket hood deflector on and it rubbed all the way through to the metal (boom03)

personally, i have rust along the bottom inside seam of the front passenger door... i REALLY want to get this taken care of this year... and i also had rust in by the Protege5 emblem on the hatch (quite common). but that was an easy fix - i just debadged the hatch! :D

Hey, I'd just like to let you guys know that you're not alone with the rust issues. My 2002 MP5 with only 61000Kms is starting to rust. I first noticed it on the seam between the rear bumper and the rear fenders near the wheel wells (on BOTH sides). A couple weeks later I noticed it starting to bubble near the emblem on the rear hatch as well.

Im thinking that in the spring I may take it to a body guy I know who will remove the affected panels, sand blast them, and repaint them. Hopefully that will fix the problem. We also have this service in my city called Rust Check, where you bring your car in and they will do an evaluation and basically soak everything in a special oil that is supposed to arrest further rust development.

I suspect my car is from the maritimes, which could explain the rust on such a young car. Its a bit depressing.

I've not seen any on mine except when they replaced my windshield for the 3rd time.. and that was because the workers didn't prime after cutting out around the windshield sill.. :(

Bubbling paint-type rust is covered under the warranty as it is rust perforation from underneath.

If it's doing it on the hood though, it must have spread from some rock chip on the hood, so I'm not sure if it counts? The cars have a 7 year (if I recall correctly) unlimited mileage warranty for rust perforation. I had both of my rear fenders repainted in July 05 when I had just over 50k miles on the car (the normal factory warranty had just expired).

The salt just kills these cars. I need to get the fenders done again, because the body shop the dealership in CT sent it to did a crap job and just kinda covered up the problem instead of fixing it.

Same probs in the UK guys.
Mine is 4 years old and the rear arch return edge needed some treatment.
Not got any anywhere else though.
My mate has a 6, 2003 model which has been in twice for rear arch work.
The Japanese boys are a bit miserable with their underboby protection.....

I found the rust, under the hood towards the front there are to lips, looks like water has been getting there from day one///

Do white P5s rust more? I live in a region they put a lot of salt on the roads so i'm a bit worried.

2002 P5 - Upstate NY... 22k / so far so good... but I pressure wash her about every other weekend in the winter

So basically if you have bubbling paint, Mazda will fix it for you? (Granted that it's within the covered time period)

The only other thing is getting the Mazda dealer to do it.... not everyone has Chris's luck... but its worth the try

I'll be testing my luck yet again possibly this saturday (if the service dept is open at the dealership up here). The rust is worse than ever on my passenger side rear fender... I'm actually seeing rust on the fender, not just on the lip going into the wheelwell.

I have recently noticed that the tip of my hood is starting to bubble. I guess I will have to have it looked at by someone before winter hits us. My problem is that I bought my MP5 from a used car lot, so i don't think i would qualify for mazda's coverage.

Ive had rust on my hatch, right under the badging, as well as the rear window frame and the fenders. So far, I've fixed te rear hatch...sort of...removed the badging, bondo'd, snaded, primered, rattle-canned it. Not the nicest look but affordable. I need to do the fenders next as they are the worst and I already have the colour matched. As for the window frame, I don't know the colour code of the frame and until I do, I'm not about to start 'patching'.

In the states the coverage is 5 years unlimited Mileage. I had issues with my right rear panel near the bumper. Got it fixed by Mazda before the warranty expired

Arg, i wish i would have taken it in when i noticed it, i took it in a few months ago only to have them tell me my perf warrany is expired. sigh.
