RPM drops when I use A/C

yeah mine's an auto. hmm udp $150, tranny swap $1,000+. udp 1.5 hours, tranny swap 15+.

I think I'll stick w/the udp for now. Though tranny swap would be so nice!
LOL, I was just playing around (stoned)

not to rain on the OP's thread, but i did have something similar happen yesterday...

i've been out of town, so my car hadn't been driven in about 3 weeks. yesterday was very warm (about 85) so i had the a/c on as i was driving around running errands. while i was driving things were fine, but if i was slowing down coming up to a red light (2nd gear and lower, or coasting), or sitting at the light idling, if the a/c was on the car wanted to stall out the rpm's dropped so low. the only way i could prevent this from happening was to either keep my foot on the gas or turn off the a/c, which is what i ended up doing.

i don't recall it ever doing this previously when i've had the a/c on, which to be honest isn't very often. i'm very stingy about using it since it sucks so much power from the engine, not to mention increasing fuel consumption. yesterday was the first time i've used my a/c this year. can it be because the car sat for so long and then i drove it on such a hot day?

i should mention that after i had my new clutch and flywheel installed (ACT street clutch with a lightened (by about 3-4 lbs) STOCK flywheel) and egr cleaned back in March, i had some problems with a bouncing idle for a few days. the rpm's would get so low the car would stall if i didn't give it gas. seemed to correct itself after a few days, so i haven't thought much of it. could my a/c problem be related to this in any way?

no, your a/c is probably just causing more drag on the engine crank than you think. Freeing up weight on the other side of the crank probably doesn't help the drive pulley side...

I think it has to do with the fact that you have less rotating mass at the crank and, like has been said, the A/C is able to bog your engine easier.

yeah I should've added

"being able to throw on a turbo and having no loss of hp/tq due to tranny... priceless"
Baha, seems a bit much to solve the AC problem, hehe. (wink)

even though the flywheel is only 4lbs (at most) lighter than stock?

if this is the case, would a UDP cause more of a strain or would it 'even out' the weight reduction? i have one sitting here waiting to be installed - once i get my timing belt and jspec intake cam.

I'd think it would even it out. Give it a try. Might as well!

The udp is a good 5 lbs lighter than the stock crank pulley.

My Auto P5 = Dog Slow

My Auto P5 + AC = Dog with only 2 legs slow

I hate summer. It robs me of horsepower.
