RPM at various crusing speed

I went an test drove the Mazda 3. It was the 2.3L with 5 speed. I noticed that the RPM range at 45mph in 5th gear was about 2.3k. Was I just mistaken? Or does the 3 really rev that high? If that is correct, then what does the 3 rev at when cruising on the highway at 70 or 80? Can anyone please let me know? Thank you.

rpm range

Although I have not had mine a week, I did have it up to about 73mph the other day for a few seconds and the rpm was right just above 3000. It was very relaxed too! Not harsh like my old P5.

I was doing 75 the other day in my 3 for about a half of mile the ride was really nice, didnt even notice i was doing that speed till a saw a cop at the light and looked down, i did see the RPMs, they were just over 3000 at about 70 in 5th

My MZ3 5 door with atx at 45mph, the speedometer registers 2000rpm's on the nose.
