Rotors...Drilled or Slotted, worth it???

IMHO, it's a waste. Im getting some plain brembo rotors for myself!

C/D will also cause your pads to wear faster...

waste of money, only reason to do it would be looks

drilled/slotted rotors are weaker and will warp faster... plus the supposed advantages (e.g. heat/gas) are pretty much moot with today's brake pad technology

I'd go OEM replacement style and a decent set of pads

Depends on what your goal is.

Drilled rotors have had a "racer" image over the years, like drilled pedals, punched side rails on exposed frame members, etc., which were in vogue on early competition machines as weight-saving measures. Drilled rotors are claimed by many to stay cooler under severe use, thus minimizing brake fade from overheated pads. They've been known to fatigue-crack and aren't recommended by some for repeated/lengthy track use.

Slotted rotors are claimed to expel heat and gases more quickly than flat-surfaced types, thus should run cooler under demanding conditions. Have seen no reports of slotted rotors cracking. For the street, some guys have painted the slots and their calipers to further highlight the brakes.

Then, there are drilled and slotted rotors for maximum effect, whatever that might be.

And, there's the "big brake" kit. Bigger calipers, bigger rotors--which is the case with drilled or slotted aftermarket pieces--which come drilled, slotted or both. Plan on spending a number of dead presidents.

And, cars still come with solid OEM rotors--no edge vents around the circumference. Generally not good over the long haul because they're usually minimal thickness and may eventually warp under prolonged use.

Pick one...

looks good, and if you race or your brakes heat up to the extreme... than they're useful. but i have mine cuz they look HAWT

Nope, they are good stuff. I got brembo rotors(drilled) in the front the back are waiting to go in very soon!!

I will be needing new rotors soon and wonder if the upgrade is a waste of money.

Correction, the OEM fronts are ventilated whereas the rears are solid.

I've done track days with upgraded pads. No fade or braking problems even with the OEM rotors. And it's not a pissy 4 or so laps, it's for prolonged use [say about an hour continously].

I've seen cracked cross drilled Brembo's on my cousin's M3 too.

I'm not to big of a fan of Mazda breaking. I my self, got a set of ebay brembo cross drilled/slotted rotors and corksport carbonfiber/kevlar brake pads. They made a hell of a difference. Especially when breaking at high speeds. But then again, this is just my opinion. Go for the cross/slotted and corksport pads (strike)

I have the brembo sloted and drilled rotors, There great, Wheels finally dont lock up from the damn rotors getting hot n s***, I have hawk hps pads too, no noise, and low dust. I got the rotors for 99 shipped on ebay.

Rotor Question

Crossdrilling rotors is awesome and in some cases better than slotting. Drilling them gives you the ability to release the gasses that build up in between the pad and rotor surface! By allowing them to cool you increase the responsiveness to your brakes!

I'm having a blow out sale on ebay for mazda parts! I'm trying to clean out my garage to make room for all those X-mas gifts we buy ourselves! HE! HE! I wana get me a vette and have lingenfelter do some work on it! Check out my auctions! I have a ton of other parts that are not listed so if you need anything just drop me a line and I'll buzz you back! I will be adding parts to ebay every day so keep check out the mazda parts. I have a P5, a protege and a B2500 that is going to be parted out entirely including sections of the car if you have a wrecked one can be purchased!

like I said earlier, the build up of those gasses is practically moot with today's brake pad technology...

save your money and spend it on a more worth while mod...

Still the brakes dont work well when there're hot, at least from my experience. Car companeis woulnt supply cars with drilled/slotted rotors if they werent any good.

I have brembo cross drilled/slotted rotors with axis metal master pads and they r great. The pedal feels more firm, and I can come to a stop alot easier now. Theres been times I have had to come to a quick stop while driving and with the rotors and pad I dont have a problem. If I had the stock rotors and pads then my car would be in a accident. From now on I will stay with the brembos. Also, upgrade to ss brake lines, heard they help alot.

upgraded pads = great money spent
crazy lookin rotors = good for on track use, on the street... save the money and buy some stockies.

I'm currently running napa 626 rotors on EBC greens. i like them alot for the street.

On our RX7 race car we use Carbotech panthers and are forced to use undrilled/unslotted rotors. so long as air is ducted to the rotor there is no fade over a whole day of 30 min races.
