2k3.5 p5 ftw!
i emailed the dealer to get them to give me the hardware for removing the roof racks. someone from the forum told me i should have gotten a hardware package in the hatch... so they say they've never heard of this stuff. i really don't like the way it looks.

should i contact Mazda, and if so how?

thanks in advance

matt

Make Sure...

you are asking for the right stuff. What you should have received with your car are four snap in plastic inserts. You remove the cross members with a phillips screwdriver and a wrench (sorry I don't recall the hex size). You also remove some plastic end fillers leaving the plastic and steel mounting rails (they run length wise on the car. The four plastic snap in pieces then fill in the gaps where the cross members sat. When we took delivery of our '03 P5, I specifically asked the salesman if they were in the car. He said "they better be" and found them under the rear floor in the well with the spare tire and jack. Is this what you want or are you looking for the full length vinyl filler strips to permanently remove the factory rack entirely? The four snap in plastic pieces should be well known to the service techs and the parts guys/gals. The vinyl strips may be new to folks.

The term "hardware" usually refers to fasteners and such so maybe that confused the the person whom you corresponded with. Jim is right, though. I have a 2003.0 P5 that came standard with the load bars and there was a box in the hatch containing the plastic filler pieces.

I believe they quit providing those sometime in 2002? I went back to my dealer for the same thing and they gave me some story about mazda not doing that anymore.

nope theres nothing there..... is there any place i can get this hardware or someone who wants to sell these pieces or possibly trade?

matt

How much are you looking topay for them?
I have a set that I may or may not want to get rid of.
Still debating if I think I will ever remove the roof rack.

Don't Panic...

Look, those four plastic filler pieces were standard equipment on US '02 and '03 P5s. They were NOT an extra cost option. In essence, you've already paid for them. You should not have to pay for them again. Look in your owner's manual at the section on how to remove the rails. The fillers are documented there. If this were my situation, I'd take the car back to the dealer, talk with the salesman, or sales manager, or general manger and ask nicely why they were not delivered with your car. By doing this in person with the car, you can show them exactly what you want. Have them go look in any pre '03.5 P5 on the lot. The fillers should be there. If it was purchased as a new car, they should have provided them. Jim

I did go back to the dealer and talked to the sales manager and he said those were no longer provided with the cars. I have a 2002 that I purchased in Nov. of 2002. I hope he is not feeding me a line.

Just to be clear... Are you talking about the little black plastic pieces that fit into the black side rails where the load bars where mounted? Or are you talking about the filler strips that you need when you take the entire rack off, side rails and all?

If it's the first they should have given them to you when you bought the car, since the car was shipped with them installed and the loadbars in a box in the trunk. If you are looking for the second, you're going to have to buy them since they are actually an additional part. I think there is a thread around here somewhere that says in order to remove the black side rails you have to remove the headliner to get to the mouning screws.

tmht is right. I've got a 2002.5 P5 and it came with the car, in fact, the dealer pulled them out of the trunk and handed them to me along with the bracket to install the front license plate. I think the salesman that you were talking to is lying to you. There is no way in hell that they wouldn't know what you were talking about. Unless you went there and specifically said you were missing hardware, in which case they were right to get confused. Just go to the dealer and tell him exactly what you want, point it out to him and if he says Mazda stopped doing that tell him that's BS!! I know that they never stopped giving these away with the cars. I bought my car here in Irvine, CA. This is the main headquarters for Mazda USA!! If the salesman still gives you problems, I suggest calling up Mazda USA and asking them about it.

yeah i'm just talking about when you remove the racks, i want to cover the open areas so it looks all one black piece. like i said, the dealer says they've never heard of it, yet there are 3 or 4 p5's on the lot with the black mounting areas 'plugged'.

anyone have a contact at mazda i could get in direct contact with to side step all this bs?

thanks
matt

Hmm... If showing the guy what you are talking about on another car doesn't work I would use the contact portion of the Mazda usa website(the contact link is right under the Mazda logo in the top left). They are pretty good about responding to email.

Mine didn't come with them either. Talked to the service manager and he told me that I had to buy them. He talk to an '02 owner I know to confirm that they SHOULD come with the car. We went into the service bay and asked a tech about them. The tech were throwing them away when they installed the roof racks. Problem solved, I'm waiting for mine to come in. If this line of questioning doesn't work, let corporate get their foot knee-deep in the dealership's a$$.

i got a similar problem here is what you got to do remove headliner and remove roof rack rail from the inside [bolted] then here are the filler pieces numbers bj30509loe one side than the other side is the same numbers and letter except the last three letters change to hoe saw on this forum similar numbers bj3d-50-9 lod and last three letters for the otherside were hod your dealer should be able to use these part numbers i got my numbers from canada maybe the others are usa i wonder if the parts are the same as i have heard that canadas roof are different structurally than usa which could cause fit issues. good luck i got a usa car made in japan.
