hi guys,

almost there in buying a new 2014 CX-5 GT w/ Tech pkg.
checked some reviews around, and it seems there are a certain of number owners complaining the road noise of the CX-5.
do any of your guys have this problem? is it because of stock tires it is using? Toyo A23?
Wondering if asking dealer to replace the tire would solve this problem.
if so.. which tire that I should go for?
P Zero Nero All Season 245/50R19?

thanks.

Sincerely,

Elvis

It's all perception. I came from a Mazda 6 and I "think" that the road noise is less in the CX-5 than it was in the 6. Just my .02.

Here we are seeing fewer complaints about road noise involving GT's w/19" Toyo tires, versus those with OEM 17's. Agreed, perceptions will vary. Don't expect dealer to do anything regarding the Toyos if only issue is road noise.

After 20K miles I'm finding the Toyo tires to be good from quietness standpoint, even when compared to 2 premium compact sport sedans driven frequently.

The 2.5 liter engine is very quiet but tire/road noise can be high on the highway. For this class of small SUV's though from what I've read it's about par. A quieter tire would definitely help here.

maybe not just road noise I assume, the whole level of noise cancellation of cx-5 they are talking about at http://www.edmunds.com/mazda/cx-5/2013/consumer-reviews.html
from my test driving experience,,, the cx-5 is making a quite lot engine noise or wind noise when it is doing uphill.
it sounds like the engine is not power enough to drive the car up;

any quieter tires you would recommend?

Road noise is pretty quiet. No need to raise your voice when having a conversation like some cars I've experienced. Most reviewers rate the CX-5 at par and better.

I've got two sets of 17" wheels and the OEM tires are quiet enough that I don't notice them (at speeds above 70 mph the sound of the air dominates) and my Goodyear Ultragrip Ice winter tires are nearly as quiet.

Very pleased with the relaxing cabin comfort/ergos/driving experience.

Mine (2.5L / 17" wheels) seems pretty quiet. Some wind noise, but nothing excessive IMHO.
Tires are pretty quiet.

The CX-5 is on par if not better than its competition in terms of road noise. Perhaps the 2.0 may sound a bit thrashy with the 4-2-1 headers and heavily resonated intake when on power. Not much of an issue none the less.

Road noise isn't bad. There is a bit more wind noise at highway speeds than my last car. Comes from around the windows. Usually not noticeable under 65 and doesn't really bother me that much. Actually I have the roof rails on with the cross bars and I get a bit of whistling from them, thinking of removing the cross bars and see if it stops.

My 19" toyo do make the most noise upto 60mph, the noise varies over different surfaces, the noise is a little more than my previous 2009 xtrail.

which is odd really as the toyo has lower noise levels than the Dunlop sp20 I had on the XT.

Wind noise takes over above 60mph, but generally I'm happy enough with the noise levels overall.

The most noise I hear is the god awful noise when the diesel is started up cold, engine revs at near 2K revs, but with added noise due to the trickery that Mazda uses to quick warm the cat.

I traded in a 2009 Honda Accord LX-P on my 2013 CX5-T. When I got back in my Honda after the test drive I was surprised at how noisy the Honda was. So, no I did not find the Mazda to be noisy. Maybe if I had come from a higher bracket car it might have been.

Ourlee: Agreed...while my CX-5 was in the shop for TSB fixes yesterday, I got a Buick Enclave as a loaner. After returning it and getting back into my CX-5 I could definitely tell the difference. BTW, here is my analysis of the CX-5 road noise compared to some other vehicles.

How many miles on the tires of the 2009 Honda Accord? Were the tires worn?

Not surprised that the Buick Enclave is quieter and has less road noise than CX-5, this is an area where Buick excels across it's entire product line (quietness, NVH).

(Buick handling, reliability, quality is not so good, but not part of this topic)

I guess I'm also trying to say $30k is the new $20k. Even though I never bother shopping for $45k + vehicles, I've ridden in plenty. It seems to me that if you want NVH excellence, this is the minimum price of admission.
