reworked turbo

hey guys, I'm finally starting to notice my car smoking a little more than normal. All I have is an intake and a catback exhaust, and my car produces clouds of smoke at idle. I am looking into getting a reworked turbo from protege garage. The only question I have is with this turbo since it will be pushing more air, will I be able to still run cobb or stock maps? I'm kind of doubting it. Anyone who has this turbo upgrade feel free to chime in.

From what i've heard.. yes. you can run either cobb or stock maps without any trouble..
I've seen guys with gt series turbos running cobb maps fine.. but the BEST performance numbers ive seen come from guys running standbacks with their bigger turbos.

feel free to ask me any questions about the reworked turbo. i've sold many of them on all kinds of setups and seen everything that comes with it.

sorry for the noobish question (just bought an 09 ms3 & on a budget) but do you recommend for safety to reinforce the engine when using your K04 upgrade (fuel pump, tuning, etc.) or is it okay to run it on stock settings?
And btw, what gains should be expected on a stock engine when this? I looked @ the dyno graph and noticed that pg mentions that the test car was well modified when the ko4 rebuild was applied.

the dyno graph was from a car with all the bolt ons and a standback from CPe. the graph is meant to show the kind of power a "stock" turbo can put out when we rework it for you, ultimate potential. on average i would expect 20 to 30 hp depending on the bolt ons and if you are tuning it or increasing the boost, even moreso then.

So...if I send in my turbo to be reworked the cost is 619.99?
Also what is the approximate turnaround time?

Thanks

Edit: same question.

if you send your core to us, it is $619.99, including return freight
if you buy a used core from us to rework, it is $1119.99, including return freight
if you buy a new OEM turbo from us to rework, it is $1619.99, including return freight.

turnaround right now is two weeks.

Isn't there an option to buy a used, reworked turbo, then send our current turbo in as part of the payment? I just couldn't do the two week's downtime it requires for having my current turbo worked on.

From PG's website -
"There are three different options for turbos. You can send in your own turbo and we will rework it and return it to you. You can order a new turbo from us via Mazdaspeed and return your old turbo to us for a core credit of $400. You can also select one of our used turbos and return your old turbo to us for a core credit of $400."

So sounds like the option you are looking for is 719.99 after the core return. 1119.99 up front.

correct (breakn)

first car we installed one of these on was a mazdaspeed3, but i would say a majority of them have been sold to mazdaspeed6 owners actually.

what was their response, did they like it, how was the power gains. I want to go with it because i think it's the safest mod you can do without blowing s*** up. lol

most everyone i talk to has positive feedback on it. some people did not feel as much a gain until they went back through the install and tightened everything back down. but for the most part, its been a very popular product. only one person to my knowledge ever blew an engine with one.

How about those bigger turbos offered, are they already made to fit our cars, or will some modification be needed?

The description on the website doesn't mention wastegate work. I saw in another thread that the wastegate's limited flow is one of the reasons that modded MS3s have such a problem with spiking, but it can be helped by a little work on the wastegate. Is there any improvement in this area on these turbos or do you not agree with that estimate?

Great question. I'd like to know the answer as well.

I enjoy my re-worked turbo..It seems to have more power up top or it just feels that way.Its a great way to go if you are on a budget like I was or am.
