Reviews keep bashing the 5's acceleration... what do you guys think?

The power is really good from 2nd-4th gear...The 4 speed auto runs quietly at high speeds, but the rpm's rest in between 4-5,000 when you reach speeds of 70mph and above...The flow of freeway traffice here in Northern California is around 75-80mph on an average day, and when I have it at 80mph the rpm's run a bit to high for me...I honestly think that the 5 would benefit greatly from a fifth gear...I mean, it is the same engine as the Mazda 3 auto and the 3's have 5 speeds...With the 5, we gain more torque than the 3, but lose a gear in return...I'd rather have a higher top end speed than more climbing power...Then again, I don't haul very much other than my wife and myself and some groceries right now...

I checked it this AM.

70 MPH Cruising 3000 RPM
70 MPH Accellerating 3200 RPM

80 MPH Cruising 3500 RPM
80 MPH Accellerating 3800 RPM

Never touched 4K until I punched it down to 3rd.

Maybe the Cali Tranny is different......lol

We have had our Touring Auto Mazda5 for 6 months and 9k miles.

As you can tell by my sig, I have had a few cars.

No problems with power. I love the launch that I can get off the line, and have suprised other more "Powerful" cars many times! It has also been fun to watch other cars trying to keep up with me through the corners, that is very entertaining! However If you want to wring out the power, be sure and rev it up to around 6k RPM, as it has some fun up there, and the motor is soooo smooth!

Low end torque is good and useable. I sometimes use the manual mode to shift to 2nd gear to start off in the rain and prevent wheelspin.

Yes, another ~25-50 hp would be nice, but I would not want to give up any MPG for it. However I vote for a Hybrid Mazda5 with an electric 25-50hp boost to the rear wheels as a part time 4wd system, now that would be sweet!

The Mazda5 is not an easy vehicle to classify, and this is what hinders most of it's reviews.

It can seat six adults, However it is not a van
It drives and handles terriffic, However it is not a sports car
It gets great MPG, is frugal, and versatile, However it is not an econobox
It is a Mazda, and is loaded with the "Mazda DNA", However, to some people, it might not be as sporty as the Mazda name automatically implies.(Think RX-7, Miata...)
I have to say also, that it is by far the EASIEST car yet, for me getting in and out of the front 4 seats. (I have bad back)

Keep Zooming!

I think the M5 has plenty of zoom-zoom. I'm having trouble not burning out everytime I leave a stop, and it's not hard to churp the tires going into 2nd or 3rd. OK, so it doesn't accelerate quite like a sports car... but guess what... it's not a sports car. It's the best balance of power-to-weight I've seen for what this car is, and I'll take the better MPG any day over a V6.

It is almost as if reviewers find ANY reason to bash Mazda vehicles! s***, if you wanted a race car or a drag car people would buy something different. This thing is supposed to be a people mover with a bit of style. Everyone always harps about acceleration times and HP. The reviewers should get a grip. Not every single vehicle in Mazda's lineup is about Zoom-Zoom.
