resurfacing flywheel?

I went to a local performance shop today to get a quote on a clutch/flywheel combo. The guy working at the shop told me that I should just get the clutch and resurface the stock flywheel. He said I would lose torque and I would be better off going this route. He said it would cost about $50 extra from the $250 to install the clutch and lsd. What do you guys think about this?

depends on what you plan to do with the car. if you plan to auto-x or low to mid speed type of racing events then go with a lightened flywheel. if you plan to drag race, freeway race, or just use it as a daily driver then just have the stock one resurfaced.

if you've ever driven a car with a lightened flywheel you will notice that the revs pick up slightly faster but will also tend to lose speed faster. also, depending on how light you go with the flywheel at lower speeds (i.e. parking lots or traffic) the car will tend to "buck" slightly when going too slow.

$50 is around the cost of having a flywheel surfaced. what kind of LSD are you installing, btw?

Thanks! That was exactly what I was looking for. For the LSD I was just planning on getting the mazdaspeed one since its not that expensive compared to others I've seen. My friend also has it and it comes highly recommended.

resurfacing is fine as long as you weren't planning on machining it to be a lightened flywheel. if you just wanted to get a clean, flat surface on it then yeah thats fine and would do what was previously mentioned. the thing is you don't wanna remove too much materail to lighten it because it will weaken the flywheel to the point that it will tend to break on heavy acceleration and without a scatter shield thats not good....my dad had a freind of his go that route and it ended up almost taking off his leg when the flywheel went.

Oh yeah I wasn't planning on having the stock flywheel lightened. I just wanted it to have a smooth surface for the clutch.

About the resurfacing.... If your clutch is NOT slipping just use some emry paper to scuff it up. It'll save you money. Also check for hot spots. If there are hot spots then you gotta resurface it.

isnt the MS one 1400 bucks?

oh ok, someone told me to check out phantom grip ?

they run like 250$ There was some bad talk about the phantom grip and how it can wreck your tranny. But others say it works great. I would love to hear from another protege owner how it works, but i dont think anyone has tried it. I got the MSP one and it's great, but expensive if you cant installed it yourself.

Yeah it is a bunch to install. . .a lot of extra pieces. . .there are a few good threads that show the entire list of parts needed.

I bought a Quaife (have yet to install it). I talked to a bunch of "race" people and they said that it was hands down the best around. Said that after driving the Mazdaspeed they thought that Tochigi-Fuji (I think that is what it is) is great, but once the drove one with a Quaife, it changed their mind. Hope so, because it wasn't cheap. Now just trying to figure out if I pay someone to install it or do it myself.

Oops. . .thread jacked or something. . .

Is it really necessary to resurface a flywheel that isn't too old (I assume it is relatively new). Thought you only needed to do that if you messed it up (went down to metal on the clutch). Oh well, what do I know anyway. . .

Let us know how it goes. . .love to hear about the LSD!
