Top Ford executives are preparing a proposal to eliminate the faltering and lost-in-the-woods Mercury brand, according to Bloomberg News. Sources say the brand, which is losing half of its offerings in 2010, will be wound down this year.

Despite a 74% sales decline since 2000 and the axing of cars like the Sable and Tracer, Ford has continually suggested that new Mercurys were coming and that the brand, created in 1939 by Edsel Ford, wasn't dead.

When contacted by Jalopnik, Ford would only issue a non-denial denial.

"What I can tell you is, our plans for Mercury have not changed," said Ford spokesperson Mark Truby. "We constantly assess our business portfolio like any good business would."

Exactly what those plans are isn't clear, since all Mercury has announced is a Focus-based compact concept. Obviously, things just haven't been the same since they lost Jill Wagner.

yeah it was longer overdue!! that sub-brand did not had a market and pretty much it was just competing against the ford line up I would say because Lincoln is the luxury division and their lineup does not share platforms as far as I know.

should be a good move for ford, their new offerings are really hot and I do not think that would translate over into the mercury brand

really I did no know they were doing that bad..I thought they were a good brand but their design since 2009 have been (dunno)(notcool)

sorry, not to clarify my rant. I meant their design. I hate it when I see a TL or TSX on the road now. just makes me throw up a little in my mouth.

Thank god! now just kill Lincoln and Buick less old people cars FTW

Lincoln is Ford's luxury brand and all it will take is one break through car for them to get turned around (a la CTS). Buick is actually starting to put out some really high quality cars but just has to get over the reputation for boring that it has built up here. Not to mention over in China having a Buick is a sign of status, and since it is the biggest car market in the world, Buick isn't going anywhere.

One can wish lol.
FL=old people=buicks=driving 15mph under the speed limit
(i had to deal with this trying to get home today so im kinda angry still lol)

Buick will never die now that its the rage in China.
Ford just needs to put some support behind Lincoln again.

I would say because Lincoln is the luxury division and their lineup does not share platforms as far as I know.

I believe the platform is the most common thing among them all...

Lincoln MKZ - Ford Fusion - Mercury Milan - Ford CD3 Platform

Lincoln MKX - Ford Edge - Ford CD3 Platform

Lincoln Navigator - Ford Expedition - Ford T1 Platform

Lincoln Town Car - Mercury Grand Marquis - Ford Panther platform

'Bout time. I can't imagine the amount of work and money that it would have taken to make Mercury into something worth having in the portfolio.
