Replacing Stock Tires or?

So I need a little advice.

I have about 18,500 miles on my CX-5. I noticed the other day that the back passenger tire had a bubble on the side and the low pressure monitor went off. I know that this means I need to replace it.

This is my first AWD vehicle and my understanding is you can't just replace the single tire otherwise it throws it all off.

So I was thinking of a couple of things. Either pull the trigger and get a set of good all-season tires or can I call the dealership and see if they'll do anything for that tire since I see no evidence of damage to the tire on the outside? But then again, since its AWD, do you have to replace all 4 anyway making that a pointless endevour?

If I need to go ahead and buy a new set of tires, can anyone recommend any? I live in Colorado, so there will be snow this winter, but I am not exactly looking for winter tires, more just a decent all-season I can throw on that will also be ok in the winter.

Thanks, kind of a noob with this stuff and checking all the tire reviews online has been crazy. Thought I'd be good to see other CX-5 owners' experience.

There's no doubt some kind of warranty on the OE Yokohamas, but it's going to be prorated for wear and would not be worth the effort or cost. Plus, you've got the AWD consideration of not wanting to have one brand new tire and three mostly worn ones. I'd bite the bullet and go for a new set. Look at the TireRack web site for help in selecting or wait and see what kind of advice you get here. Personally, I would use TireRack's expertise.

Not sure if it is true or not but when I was getting a replacement tire for my G35 at Costco they said if one tire on an AWD setup was taken out and new tire wear was too far out they would replace all 4 for the price of one. Now take this with a grain of salt because I didn't get it in writing.

I purchased there because wife took sidewall out on Michelin MXV4. I had originally purchased through TireRack and didn't want to wait for delivery.

Mazda 2013 CX-5 owners manual covers that topic and gives recommendation below that applies to both fwd and awd versions:

Replace all four tires at the same time:
Replacing just one tire is dangerous.
It could cause poor handling and
poor braking resulting in loss of
vehicle control. Mazda strongly
recommends that you replace all four
tires at the same time.

Not disputing the need for 4 tires when replaced but Costco might be a cheaper option for a non-repairable tire if it is fact true about only needing to purchase 1. I need to further look into the Costco policy. The best method would be a 5 tire rotation if that was possible.

Good to know, thanks guys. Guess I will go ahead and bite the bullet.

Any tire recommendations?

Why not just replace two tires? As long as you keep the worn ones up front and the better ones in the back, and do the next rotation just from left to right and not criss-cross you should be okay...

And keep the "good" replaced tire so you have a spare in case you have a similar issue with one of the other ones.

That must be an extra cost tire warranty deal (which Costco should provide in writing of course). I highly doubt it's standard/no extra charge with Costco tire purchase.

The days of 5 tire rotations are dwindling rapidy (not that I miss it), kinda like carbs and leaded gasoline. Even space saver spares are gradually being phased out.

You might be interested in this thread over at tirerack:

specifically this part:
Tire Rack can provide a solution by matching the tread depth of the replacement tire to the tread depth of the partially worn tires that will remain on the vehicle by removing tread rubber from a new tire on a specialized machine that operates as a tire lathe. While this may seem counterintuitive, the value of the mileage sacrificed by the one replacement tire is considerably less than the cost of rebuilding worn driveline components.

Or...there's someone in Des Moines, Iowa selling three of these used Yokos individually on eBay for $45-$60 depending on tread depth (which he lists) with free shipping! http://www.ebay.com/itm/USED-TIRE-Y...=100011&prg=10284&rk=3&rkt=10&sd=121340529428

might not a bad option. as long you get them inspected by a tire shop I don't think it would be too much of a safety hazard... right?
He has this one listed with 7-8"/32..

Thanks everybody, lots of good info here.

Well that is a tough spot to be in, and I too have been in it before myself...(scratch)

You likely have about 35-40% life remaining on the other 3 tires...

The frugal route: $100 ? Find a like used tire that matches your others. This would likely get you through another year before you need a set of 4

The bite the bullet route: $650 Get a new set of 4 that closer matches the characteristics you want. (Traction, comfort, road noise, snow and mud, etc.)

It really depends on how used up the other 3 "good" tires are and how happy you are with them.

one of the reasons I buy all my tires at costco for the past 5 years has been their warranty.

About 4 years ago, my gf car had bf goodrich tires from costco and she had a screw right on the edge of the sidewall (where its not possible to repair) the way their warranty works is they measure the treadwear of the tire, and they charge only that % for a new one.
In my case, the tire had only one year use, and it cost me 20$ for a brand new tire (original price was 160$)

This might be what I was thinking about with the 4 tire replacement at Costco. You would only have to pay the prorated amount for all four tires instead of full cost for the other three.

Subaru and Audi, with TRUE 100% AWD recommend that ALL tires be the same circumference to within 1/4 inch. For most sizes that 1/4 inch relates to about 2/32 inch tread difference maximum. Since the Mazda 4W drive system is not 100%, I suspect that a difference of maybe 3/32 difference might be tolerated, front to rear. Unfortunatly, Mazda has chosen the easy way out and just recomend always buy 4 new which is the most expensive way for their customers. Ed
