Could someone give me a hint here? I don't have the tools, so I was trying to pull it off with other objects. I'm afraid to continue because I don't want to break anything. Does it lock in place somehow, or is it just a pressure-based snap on?

Heh, nevermind. I finally got bold. Now I just have to get the damn thing out.

yeah, I didn't know where my keys were so I just used a screw driver to press down the tabs holding the radio in.

Just got a kenwood... will it work properly if I don't have a pocket or anything in the lower din, or do I need to put it in the lower din untill I get something to put in there?

YOu need something to take up the extra space and support the bottom front of the kenwood unit. Be it a dash kit mazda OEMsupport bar, or even custom.
