Removing rear emblem to paint?

Hey. I'm going to be painting the Mazdas emblems black, and I got the front one off no problem but I'm a little weary about taking a utility knife and screwdriver to the rear emblem as it appears to be glued directly to the body, as opposed to the front which is on an outline of the emblem, attached to the grill.

Any tips on how to get the rear one off? THANKS!!!

Follow Kid's guide. Good instructions and the pics are worth a million.

THis is the best way to do it. Just take your time.
 
i just used a heat gun and a really thin plastic spatula. just heated the glue and then there are two prongs on each emblem that fit into holes to hold them in place. just be careful when you pry them off that u dont break them. then i had some glue adhesive stuff and a couple shop towels to take off the excess glue on the car and it didn't affect the paint. then i sanded the emblems and gave about 3-4 coats of flat black bbq paint. after they dried for a few hours i used double sided tape to put them back on. they have stayed on for like 4 months no problems so far and they look sick.
 
So are there prongs on the mazda emblem? Not the protege5, mazda, or anything else, just the flying M? That's all I want to paint black, I'm leaving everything else.
 
There are prongs on all the badges...use dental floss to work behind the badges and pull them off...pretty damn easy.

and personally....black them all, or don't black any...it will look odd with just the one....or pull the other two and get plastic plugs to fill the holes and color match them...

Rag + flat head worked for me.
I did the Cut flying M up front and painted it.
In the rear I could not cut due to prongs, so I painted it to match the cut design of the front. Looks hot. Also I decided to keep my 5 red and painted everything else black. Looks double hot.
 
Yeah dude I removed all the back emblems today, just decided to black them all...but I'm keeping the 5 red, everything else is black. I have them drying out on the porch right now, so hopefully the red 5 looks alright with the rest black, if not, well...I guess I'll black the five too but I thought that might look kinda weird.

What color is your car.
It looks good on my white car. But I have accented everything with black/smoke look.
Black head lights
Smoked side markers
Smoked bumper lights
Black tails (sold them and put on the OEM)
Black tint
Black DGM lip
Black luggage rack (stock doh!)

I think it looks really good.
 
My car is midnight blue with tinted rear lights and a 20% tint all around, so I kinda wanted to keep it dark.

I got the Protege5 and Mazda emblems back on, but the flying M's (both front and back) I'm gonna have to redo. I used a little too much goop and it kinda got on the front part. I tried to wipe it off but it started scratching the paint I applied so I'm gonna start over and try it again tomorrow.
 
Yeah man...you will have a nice color combo going.
Post up some after shots when you redo it.
 
Yeah it should be pretty sick, actually the car posted a few posts up made by In Flames looks almost EXACTLY like my car, except I have different tail lights. I have the stock Mazda rims powder coated dark gray, probably a little darker than that pic with the calipers colored matched to the body.

ANYWAY, I ****** up the first try so I'm repainting all the pieces. For one thing, the red five with the black everything else looked weird to me. I think I used a little too much goop cause I let all the pieces sit overnight and there was quite a bit of extra and when I tried to chip it off it smeared the paint of the emblems, so I'm gonna take my time and let them dry for AT LEAST 24 hours before attempting to put them back on.

So now I need to remove the paint and all the goop that's on there. I used goo gone and a utility knife for the goop, but what's the best for getting rid of the paint without damaging the plastic? Just normal nail polish remover?
 
I dunno the red 5 looks hot on mine :)
I'd say use some nail polish remover and a hard toothbrush or soft wire brush.
You can even sand it down if you really want to go all out.
I used my dremel to cut so while I had it out I used it to sand and smooth
out the rock chips on the front badge. Helped a bit.
Just take your time. I used regular black spray paint from walmart and clear from the same rack. I used the cheapest stuff with no issues. Take your time.
Oh yeah I did mine overnight it was better. I let it dry/cure overnight & put it back on the next day.
 
Oh so you let the goop sit on the emblems overnight before putting it back on the car? Thanks, I'll try that out next time! Might reduce the amount of excess that seeps out from underneath them.

And yeah, the red looked alright but I think I'm sticking with all black! Thanks for the tip!
