Removing air bag from steering wheel

Well folks I broke down and purchased a new steering wheel for my 97 Miata. Now the task at hand is the careful removal of the stock air bag WITHOUT having it go off in my face! Any help would be appreciated. Or perhaps a site where I can get written instructions. Either way I need help!

There are 4 nuts on the back of the steering wheel that support the airbag. Remove said nuts and the airbag module will come out. Disconnect the blue and orange connectors and you're done.

air bag removed

Thanks to your simple instructions, the air bag is now out of the car and my new steering wheel is installed. However, the "air bag" light keep blinking at me! Do I need to pull a fuse or something to make it go away? Thanks for your suggestions.

There is a blue box under the driver's side dash with two harnesses leading into it. Simply unplug the two harnesses and the airbag light will remain on (steadily). At this point, you can remove the bulb from the cluster. If you simply remove the bulb without disconnecting the controller, it will emit an annoying noise for the first few seconds that the car is started.

if you have time, pull the whole dash out and find all the airbag sensors and the brain and pull them all out. I need to do that still. The airbag light has been blinking at me for months lol.

I wish I knew how mine was setup. I just bought my 90 with a Nardi wheel, and when I start the car the air bag light comes on just like in my truck, and goes off after 5 seconds.
